Tyre Reviews All Season Premium Touring Tyre Tests

Highway terrain all season tyres are probably the most important category of tyre I've never tested. They're one of the biggest selling segments in North America, so it was about time I gave them the same treatment every other category gets.

For this test I picked seven of the most popular HTs on sale today, all in 265/65 R18, spanning pretty much every price point you'll find at a US tyre shop. There's the segment benchmark - the Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 - alongside the brand-new General Grabber HT, mid-range options from Cooper (Endeavor Plus), Firestone (Destination LE3), Kumho (Crugen HT51) and Yokohama (Geolandar HT G056), and a budget tyre in the Westlake SU318 HT to find out how far cheap has come. The question I wanted to answer is the one I think most truck owners are asking: does spending more money actually mean a better tyre?

This years Tyre Reviews all season tyre test has 9 of the most popular all season tyres, and one of the best summer tyres, the Continental PremiumContact 7 and one of the best winter tyres, the Continental WinterContact TS870 P as reference tyres.

I'm also using a RWD Mazda MX-5 to find out whether rear wheel drive makes any difference to the established results!

I've performed the world's first test of the new Michelin CrossClimate 3 and CrossClimate 3 Sport all season tyres, putting them up against two of the leading competitors, the multiple test winning Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3 and the excellent dry and wet focused Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6.

As always I've tested them in the dry, wet, noise and comfort, and I have rolling resistance and snow data to show you exactly how the two new Michelins compare to some of the best competition in the segment.

Michelin has just unveiled not one but two exciting new additions to their all-season tyre lineup: the CrossClimate 3 and the all-new CrossClimate 3 Sport. While the CrossClimate 3 represents an evolution of the much loved CrossClimate 2, the CrossClimate 3 Sport is a completely new offering aimed at drivers of sportier vehicles who still want all-season versatility.

Having spent a week testing both new tyres alongside the CrossClimate 2, I can explain how these new models perform, and what improvements Michelin has made to their already impressive all-season range.

Nokian have just announced the Nokian SeasonProof 2, the first tyre from their new, state of the art factory in Europe. They are hopeful this will finally be the tyre that brings them to the front of the all season market, so of course I had to test it!

In this test, I will be testing seven of the best all season tyres in the popular 235/55 R18 tyre size. As these are all season tyres, I will be testing them in all seasons, covering the dry, wet and snow performance of these tyres, and testing the noise, comfort and rolling resistance levels of the tyres to help you make the most informed choice for your own driving needs.

For the longest time the Michelin CrossClimate 2 has been the best all season / all weather tyre on the market, winning more tests than any other tyres in its category, including my tests for the last 3 years!

However, since last year's test there have been not one, not two, but three new premium all season tyres launched, all looking to dethrone the CrossClimate 2 from its category top spot. 

Naturally I had to find out whether any of these new tyres from Bridgestone, Continental and Pirelli can match the Michelin, so as usual I'll be testing everything, including wear, to see which is best! And I've also thrown in a couple of tyres Dunlop and Yokohama, because why not.

Can any of these new tyres really challenge the CrossClimate 2, or are they all going to be left wanting for more?

The new Nokian Outpost nAT claims to be an all terrain tyre you can use in snow, but how good is it? Nokian invented winter tyres, so they're pretty confident, so confident in fact they suggested we test it against the king of winter tyres, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5, along with their much loved all weather tyre, the Nokian WRG4 SUV, and their high mileage all season tyre, the Nokian One SUV.

Before we start, it's worth noting that three of the tyres are 3PMSF marked, which is the 3 peak mountain snowflake symbol, sometimes called "severe snow rating". The Winter, All Weather and All Terrain tyres carry the 3PMSF marking, but the all season does not. The test size was 265/65 R17, and we used a Toyota Hilux for the test in RWD only mode.

For the 2023/24 season, Tyre Reviews has tested ten of the very best all season tyres available. Following on from last years test in 17", this year we focused on the smaller 15" wheel size, and included summer and winter reference tyres to highlight exactly what the best all season tyre is for your driving, and where summer and winter tyres fit into the overall performance.

As always, this is one of the most in depth all season tyre tests on the internet, and each of the ten sets of tyres are tested in the dry, wet and snow, plus the tyres subjective noise and comfort and rolling resistance (energy use) is also tested.

The UK climate represents a difficult challenge for car tyres. Warm enough to require a tyre that works well at higher temperatures, but not warm enough to make a summer tyre the best choice year round.
