Similar Tests

Every year Auto Bild test over fifty tyres in wet and dry braking testing to decide which twenty tyres make it through to the full summer tyre test. In 2019 they have tested 53 patterns, using the popular 225/45 R17 summer touring tyre size.

When compared to the 2018 version of the test, the gap between the best and worse tyres on test is actually smaller! The best wet braking tyre, the new Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3, stopped the car in 28.7 meters from 80 kph (50 mph), and the worse tyre on test, the budget Star Performer TNG UHP1 in 39.4 meters, a difference of 10.6 meters. While that's smaller than the 17.6 meters separating the best and worst in 2018, it's still the difference between stopping safely and a crash at over 40 kph (25 mph) on the cheaper tyre.

Even from the higher speed of 100 kph (62 mph) the gap in dry braking is always closer, but there was still a 4.9 meter difference between the best (Michelin Pilot Sport 4) and the worst (Tyfoon Successor 5), which could be the option of stopping safely, or another big accident.

Hi I have a 1966 Healey 3000, 15" wires 5.5" wide.
I'm not bothered for period correct tyres, especially as they are 3x the price of modern tyres that will fit my wheels.
I want to fit 195/65R15's - and am considering Bridgestone T005's, but have read a few reviews suggesting the sidewalls are soft.
As my tyre profile is quite large, will these be appropriate, and if not, what could you suggest.
MPG/Wear/noise/snow is not important,
Grip and braking are priority.
Costs similar to the T005's would be preferable.
Thank you for your advice and fab website.

  All modern tyres in that size are going to have soft sidewalls, it's just the way the industry has gone. The T005 aren't the softest.

    The Nokian wetpro maybe?
    Also, will picking a fast speed rating help with a stiffer sidewall, and what about the XL rating?
    How critical is all this? Am I just over thinking it? Will I even notice?

Iam very curious about Firemax because they have a good distribution and very low prices in Portugal.     I am also surprised between the test result and the individual reviews by users which indicate that this tyre is an excellent wet tyre, but some lesser known makes performed better in the test ! Is there a placebo situation here where because it's called Rainsport users assume they are getting an excellent wet weather tyre ? I would love to know ?

      The Rainsport 3 is an old tyre now, it's natural it slips down the order compared to the newest and best. User reviews can still be valid, it might just be their older reviews, or the user hasn't had the chance to drive the latest and greatest. The Rainsport 3 isn't a bad tyre, it's just not as great as the latest generation.

    Someone is lying here... the pattern on your link is indeed the new saloon version of the pz4. But available on 18" minimum. If you continue with the link available beneath the picture, the old pzero appears ;)

      That's not the new PZ4 but the Cinturato P7. Don't know if it's the blue or not, but on that pic it looks quite black...
      However the text next to it says 94 Y in which spec neither is available, just the old P Zero. And the P Zero Nero GT, but if the results are correct it's not likely to be that.
      In whichever case the results are pretty impressive considering that all of them are pretty old designs, let's see if it'll remain like that in the full test. :)
