Not every driver has the same priorities. Adjust the category weightings above to re-rank the tyres based on what matters most to your driving style.
Scores are colour-coded from red (weakest) through yellow to green (strongest) to help you quickly spot each tyre's strengths and weaknesses.
The original test ranking is shown in the # column. Arrows indicate how each tyre moves when your custom weighting is applied.
Hello,
I'd be happy to get some advice on UUHP tyres for my M440i G26.
They came with PS4*, which are terrible. Unstable and low self damping.
I had both PS4S and PS4S* on my old M340i. PS4S* was fantastic. Unfortunately they're not available in 245/40 R19 and 255/40 R19.
My options are PZ4*, Contisport7, or std PS4S. The chassis of the G26 is a bit different than the G20's, which was much more forgiving.
I'm looking for stability at high speed and cornering and better self damping.
What would you recommend?
Many thanks!
Are you currently on runflats?
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Apologies. I'm a little surprised the PS4S are unstable, they're usually a very good tyre, though they probably have less grip in the wet than the normal versions. Lots of people move to the asymmetric 6 on BMWs and love the move. PC7 or SC7 also worth looking into depending on how sporty you want.
I'm on PS4*, see the first post.
I'm looking for PS4S* performance... I want stability and grip. PS4S* isn't available in my dim.
SC7
Hello Guys,
can you give me some advise in tires for high speed autobahn work? I have an Audi S6 with 420Bhp. and I drive mainly (fast) on the autobahn. currently the car is equipped with P zeros (255/35/20). they are ok, but a bit noise.
I do not do track days, I only drive fast in long straits, so I prefer tires which are stable (not nervous) at high speeds. (to bad you don't mention this in your tests..) comfy and also good in the wet.
I do a lot of miles and therefor tried a lot of different brands, one of my all time favorite was the dunlop sp sport max.
thanks and keep up the good work.
Menno
Sounds like a job for the Michelin or Goodyear (especially if you liked Dunlop)
Any idea when we can expect the Pilot sport S5 in more sizes, nearly pulled the trigger on some Conti 7s but would like to see how they compare against the S5 first?
No time soon
Hello,
Looking for advice regarding tires for a 2017 BMW 740d xDrive G11, with sizes 245/40/20 and 275/35/20.
The car is used mainly for highway journeys at fast pace, but also has to manage some rough country roads and cobbled streets, although at very lower speeds.
The OEM tire is Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT. I don't like the tire harshness of the RFT, and pretend to change to a normal tire, to gain comfort.
Regarding tires for everyday cars, I always preferred the Michelin Pilot Sport series, for the balance of comfort, dry grip, wet grip, and wear.
While looking for alternatives in the main brands, I found that in these sizes, without RFT, options are very limited, and mainly found the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and the Continental Contisportcontact 5P.
I've had the regular PS4 and PS5 in my last 740d F01, and loved the tire.
Never considered the PS4S as is seems to be a more extreme tire suited for sportscars.
What trade off can I expect in terms of comfort and wear comparing to the PS4, considering the higher grip levels of the PS4S?
The data from the test about the PS4S seem to suit my driving style, but all the reviews seem to be made for pocket rockets and sportscars.
In your opinion, do you reckon that the PS4S is suitable for a BMW 740d G11, in the stated conditions?
Thanks
Hello guys, I really really need your advice. I have a BMW i8 2018 which has quite worn out Bridgestone S001 tires with standard dimensions 215/45 r20 front and 245/40 r20 rear, that I am looking to replace.
The standard tires are quite skinny and the cars is struggling with traction sometimes...also the steering is quite light. After reading on different BMW forums, I found out that a lot of owners change this standard set-up with 245/40 r20 front and 275/35 r20 rear, this keeps almost the same diameter but adds width, improving the traction and steering(at least as per the users reports).
I am looking for a tire set-up that would make the car more sporty and fun to drive on the road. No track use and almost exclusively used on dry, warmish weather(above 15*C). Considering the fact that the car is build around the light weight philosophy, also I would prefer the most light weight tire option.
My options are(from cheapest to most expensive):
1.Vredestein ULTRAC PRO(from the early reviews seems more of a wet and comfort specialist? quite heavy also?)
2.Bridgestone Potenza Sport
3. Pirelli PZ4 * BMW
4.Goodyear F1 SS(maybe too noisy and harsh for every day use?)
I am looking for a nice sporty feel, but without making the car extremely harsh for daily use. Maybe the most obvious option would have been the Conti SC7 but unfortunately it is not available in the 245/40 r20 size, the other obvious option would have been the PS4s but it is considerably more expensive (even 50% more than the Ultrac Pro for example...does it worth the 30-50% price difference from the other tires?).
Which one do you think I should choose? Thank you in advance
That seems like a bit too much of a jump in size, especially the rear axle without changing the wheel width, but if people like it then perhaps it's fine.
The S001 isn't know for great traction, especially in the wet so you should get a good improvement even keeping the same sizes. The potenza sport is a great tyre if you don't mind something a little higher wearing but probably isn't less harsh than the goodyear. I would go for an Asymmetric 5/6 if you can get it in your sizes.
Thank you very much for the reply, I don't mind the wear as the car is used mostly only in the weekends. Unfortunately asy 6 is not available in those sizes...what about pz4* star mark and ultrac pro? they would not be up for the task?
Is the PZ4* a runflat? If not I'm sure it would be fine. I've never driven the new Ultrac Pro so I'm hesitant to recommend it.
The PZ4* is not runflat, after reading the tests, looks like in the dry the PZ4 is very closely matched with the PS4S, which is a good thing, also being BMW spec i supposed its even a little better compared with the standard tire. Let's hope you will drive the Ultrac Pro soon and share the experince with us.
How would Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport compare to Yokohama Advan Sport V107 in terms of dry handling (both subjective and actual performance)?
I'm also interested in the dry comparison between the Yokohama V107 and the Goodyear F1 Supersport. Thank you
Me too!
How would Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport compare to Yokohama Advan Sport V107 in terms of dry handling - both subjective and actual performance?
Hey guys! I need some advise. I have 2 decent tires on my car which are 2 years old. I want to replace the 2 older ones with something better so I can have better handling. The car is 220 HP FWD. Do you think it would be okay to only buy 2 new tires and put them in the front?
The general advice is to put the new on the rear as understeer is easier to handle than oversteer, and it will wear out the older ones more quickly
Hi,
is it possible to expect 2023/2024 UHP summer tyres review somewhere in February? If so, will Falken Azenis FK520 be included in that test? I have not decided yet if I should lean for contisport 7 or somewhat promising opinions that I have read on FK520 are reflected in the tests. The platform is GTI 7.5 Performance. Thanks and have a good one!
Not from me, the Germans usually start around March. The 520 doesn't seem to be testing that great, it's already been in 8 tests and never placed that well.

hello and thank you for this wonderful data. I need a set of tires for an Audi sq8 (285/40/22) I don't track the vehicle , and need tires for florida weather (sun+rain). should I be looking at the high performance tires? all season? I'm mainly looking for ride comfort and high tread life. any information would be appreciated :)
I'd be looking for a summer tyre, probably the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV.
Hi Johnathan,
I have a 570 hp bmw m140i sdrive with fast road setup. I need a road tire in 245/35/18 (all round) with maximum grip and heat resistance, which is the most important for me.
I barely drive on the track, but sometimes also in the wet and cold, so a semi slick is not the right one I think.
As there is sadly no conti sc7 and ps4s in this dimension (255 would not fit at the front, 235 i think too small for the power) - I can not decide between the michelin ps5 and the goodyear eagle F1 supersport. The Bridgestone Potenza Sport would be my third option. I want to keep the square setup because the handling is much better.
Currently I have the ps4s in 19" 245/30 and are happy with it, although it could be more responsive and heat resistant but I want to switch to light 18" for performance reasons.
I will take the Japan Racing SL01 Wheels in 8,5 x 18 ET40.
Thanks! BR Matthias
If I need to replace my rear tyres and currently have falken fk510s on the front, is it a bad idea to mix with sport contact 7s on the rear?
For an m340i xdrive I can't decide between ps4s, ps5 and sc7, I want a hard sidewall with good lateral grip, and sporty feeling in feedback. F: 225/40R19 and R: 255/35R19
Probably sc7 unless there's a spicy * Ps4S in your size
Hi,
I'm in a similar situation, but I belive there are no star* marked sc7 in that size? Any information if we might get them in the spring?
Best regards
as far as I know there won't be any * marked SC7s
Thank you. Too bad to hear that. I guess there’s not enough demand for Xdrive cars.
Hi Jhonathan and a big thanks for the work you are doing and is very helpful.
I'm driving the new BMW M2 G87 and as I'm buying new "real" light wheels" for my car I'm also considering switching my tires (PZ4 BMW). Knowing that my car is really a daily would you go with the Michelin PS4S BMW or the Continental Sport Contact 7 ? I'm not tracking (once a year), but commute and Alps roads. Thanks in advance for the reply
If you want the best wet performance the Conti is hard to beat.
Hi Johnathan and thanks for a very comprehensive review. I own an 118i F40 M Sport that currently wears a set of 235/35 R19 Potenza Sport. I mainly drive on the highway (66%) and city, no tracks. I live in The Netherlands, so wet driving is quite typical, plus I am not pushing hard on tyres since engine is not that powerful at 140hp. I need to change tyres so an advise would be appreciated. The PS4S are star marked for my model so if you would recommend them over SC7 that would make things easier. Thanks in advance for reply
Asymmetric 6, cheaper, lasts longer and if you're not pushing that hard, probably a better match than the SC7.
Hi, lemme give my thoughts as well. I've tried a lot of tires, but the Assy6 is insanely good. E.g. compared to S1EVO3 which is a superb tire as well, the Assy6 gave much much sharper, faster and better steering feel and in the same time much better comfort, made the saem bumps signifficantly less hurtful. I have no idea how they made it. :D And also the grip is insanely good. A whole new level compared to the Assy5s. I did not like my assy5s, but the Assy6 is like a track tire, and a tourer tire in the same body. I would only buy anything else (SC7, PS4S, SUpersport, etc) If i really need a tiny-tiny bit more grip, and harsh even more precize steering feel. So basically if the car is all about B road blasts and track days. For every other situation, the Assy6 is a killer.
(My big ? now is, what to buy for the MK3 RS as a weekend B road fighter, and used only for fun drives, since its a 2nd car. )
Hi Johnathan! I've been binging reviews one after another and thought my decision was done, but I've got a problem now.
I drive an m140i xdrive with 225/40 Hankook S1 evo 3 on all corners. Magic in the wet, kind of meh in the dry. The car doesnt tend to over or understeer but just doesn't have great lateral grip.
Because of the 18 inch wheels, I'm down to 2 options:
F1 Supersports on 245/35 18
SportContact 7 on 235/40 18
I do spirited driving every now and then, see rain relatively often (Germany), and visit the Nurburging 4 times a year for one or two laps.
Which one would be right for me? On track I felt the chassis couldn't keep up with the 450+ hp I'm currently driving with and I'm not clear wether the extra 10mm of tyre width would mean so much.
I'm not big on messing with tyre sizes, especially on x-drive so I'll confuse you more and recommend 225/40 R18 PS4S as it's the GR Yaris version, or the Conti in that size.
oh boy even more confusion... well my current setup is not OEM anyway. But thanks for that though, I do remember barely keeping up in corners with a Yaris on the Nurburgring so there might be something there
Thanks a bunch for the reply :D
Hi Jonathan, I used to work in the tyre and then motor industry so have quite a lot of experience although I have been out the game for a few years now
I have a 380bhp 405ftlb Mk5 Pirelli Edition which is setup for track use... I no longer do track days and haven't for 5/6years due to other financial commitments although enjoy spirited driving still. I do very low milage about 8k miles in 4.5 years and the pair of Pirelli PZ4 I have on the rear are heavily cracked and in need of replacing with 5.5mm tread remaining!! The set of Pzeros on the front are now just above the legal limit however one has a screw in the outer tread block bordering non repairable. The Pzeros have been on the car for maybe an extra 6-12 months. I wanted to try and keep Pirelli's being a Pirelli Edition car but if im not getting the use out of them I am happy to look elsewhere. I originally ran SC5p on track (8 years ago) which got eaten alive in 1 day then I swapped to PZeros for the following 2 years and they were really good given they also matched the car and worked well as a daily road tyre, loads of grip and good longevity.
Because of the above I am not overly concerned about treadwear or starting tread depth because im pretty much having to bin off a set of perfectly good tyres due to perishing. the PZ4s have been on the car since early 2019 (DOT 4618) so not excessively long and they already have very large cracks in them.
I have been looking at current UUHP/Road Going Track Tyres and available to me/what I have narrowed down to from your tests are...
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport
Continental Sport Contact 7
There are no tests that compare the Cup2Connect to the other 2 tyres... I dont mind that it starts with less tread or any of that as Id rather change the tyre worn out than perished, all I want is maximum dry grip for a high power FWD car to utilize its power well rather than spinning wheels like mad... I get that is always going to happen but the grippier the tyre the less it will happen. I don't have a LSD yet as the clutch hasn't worn out yet (its been in for 10 years!!!) when it does I will replace and fit LSD at the same time to help with grip.
I drive very sensibly in the wet as there is no need to push any boundaries on the UK roads in the wet. I like to attack roundabouts and accelerate hard (when road conditions and traffic suit!!) through 2nd 3rd & into 4th over that and its excessively fast for our roads.
Do you have a recommendation based on the ample experience you have on all 3 tyres given the information I have provided?
Thanks in advance
If you will never see rain or cold weather, the Cup 2 is a good option. If you do, the SportContact 7 will be the best all round tyre.
Thanks very much, I do see rain and cold as I live in the UK lol but as I said in these conditions I am extremely cautious anyway, my daily commute is 3 miles each way. If I went Cup 2 I guess I'd just be extra cautious with standing water although the new Connect has slightly more tread than the normal Cup 2. To be completely honest having spent so much time on track I know that is where you can have the most fun so driving on the roads bores me at the best of times and as a result I do generally drive extremely slowly even more so in wet conditions much to my fiancées annoyance sometimes, as I said I just want a tyre that will fire up quick and give me stacks of grip for the occasional times I want to attack a bend/roundabout or accelerate hard.
How would you compare the dry performance of both tyres?
Perhaps a good video to do some time would be for the Hot hatch enthusiast and the UUHP tyres like the SC7 & Eagle SS vs the Semi Slick world of the Cup 2 Connect & Trofeo R etc. I know there is a written review but the way you translate everything on video is brilliant and would really help people with the visual side of it.
Hey!
Finally my staggered CLS setup is done. I thought it is fair to share my experience. I had S1EVO3 all around 255front, 285 rear.
It grips like hell and wonderful in rain, but hated it because the steeringwhhel is laggy, lazy, dull. And the back of the car feels loosen and wobble at hard cornering. I made a decision to replace them right away, and a lil bit narrower ones since they will be better in every aspect.
I chose Asy6 for fronts in 245. They are mindblowing! Much more comfy, even with a slight decrease in sidewall thickness. The difference is surprisingly big. Asy makes the road much muhc smoother. Huge plots felt significantly less. The noise is also a bit less. And, a huge AND, the steeringwheel reaction is day and night much better. Still not a tracktire, but awesome for road spirited drive. My mind is blown, that Asy6 is more comf and also sharper...most of the cases is a choose between those....and the S1EVO3 is a good tire, but still destroyed.
I chose PS4 for the rears in 275. Wanted the PS4S but it is not available anymore. And there is no other fine tire available in 275/35r18. The PS4 surprised me, since the sidewall is pretty stiff. The wobbly loosen and is gone, the car is very very confident in the corners, finally I am confident and not terrified that rear grip is lost.
It is a bit quieter (expected even more since there is 4dB difference, but maybe needs some more miles to blend in) and everything is more or less the same. so in conclusion, the PS4 is not a dull tourer tire, it is advised to buy for a sporty but not uncomfortable tire. basically it delivers the same comf, grip, etc as the S1EVO3, but with perfect precision and sidewall-stability (which is dealbreaker) and more silence, and a supersexy sidewall. :D The dry and wet grip is not tested yet to the limits...both are perfect.
Summary: S1EVO3 is not really ideal in wide sizes, Asy6 is magic, PS4 is not a lazy tourer tire, be brave to use it for road-spirited usage.
Glad you're enjoying your choice, thanks for the update :)
Hello Jonathan, I'm driving crazy reading and comparing info where each one have diferent impresion or opinion about the tyres, and can not get verified information for my point of view.
I need to change the Pirelli pz4 originals of my car (Hyundai i30 fastcback N performance), but im hesitating about the Michelin PS4S, or Continental SportContact 7/Goodyear eagle F1 SS.
I read about people continental experiences, that hardly last more than 10000 km, but, for example i had Continental contisportcontact 5 in my previous car, and in the drive axle, the tyres lasted 25000/ 30000 km, and the actual Pirelli pz4, have now 50000 km, so seems that i can't take the people experiences as a reference because in my case with my driving is lasting much more.
Anyway, about SP7, there is a big diference in comfort terms with PS4S? And between SP7 and Goodyear eagle F1 SS, which would you recommend in terms of comfort. I drive 80% highlway, and mountain passes sometimes, 0 track. I'm from Spain , so the wet weather is not a problem here.
Michelin would be my first option, but lot of people complain about soft sides that ruin the experience.
You want comfort but then you worry about soft sides ruining the experience. You're going to have to decide which one you want more, comfort or sporty handling :)
what would do a better job of being a daily tyre for an M4? Goodyear Asymmetric 6 or ContiSport 7? wet weather handling is v important being in the UK and having a good wear rate as well. im not after out and out performance but want a good tyre that can handle poor weather and last as well.
There's a few tests on the site comparing them directly I suggest you dig into. In fact, this should help :) https://www.tyrereviews.com...
What tyre would you recommend for a daily driver but also doing 3-5 track days a year?
Yokohama Advan Sport V107 or Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport
Why not SportContact 7?
The other two wear better on track. I'm not sure the SC7 would do 5 track days if you're a fast driver.
I'm also interested in the dry comparison between the Yokohama V107 and the Goodyear F1 Supersport. which one to choose for sporty driving in the mountains and some track days? Thank you
Jonathan, do you have any data on treadwear of SportContact 7 compared to other tyres like PS4S or Potenza Sport?
Sorry, I've never seen the SC7 tested for wear. Conti say it should be similar to the PS4S, but they might be bias.
Hey! Again... Now I have some experience with the S1EVO3. Conclusion is, that they grip magical in wet. Pure magic. But the rest is average. I don't feel incredible grip at the back (expected more from a 285 width fresh rubber). The noise is a bit too much, and fuel cons is worse compared to the PZero. And the worst is the steering-feeling. Very boaty, wobbly. My winter tyre had much more direct and sharp, sportscar-like feeling. I miss that.(already overinflated them a bit to help, but no diff) And I also feel the wobbly behaviour at the back, i just feel that extra stretch, which makes me very unconfident if its started to slide, or just wobbling around :( I recently learned, that rim width vs tyre width can mean a huge difference. My stock setup is weird. 255 on 8.5" and 285 on 9.5"....too wide tyres.
My plan is to fit a 245 one on the front 8.5" and trying out a 255 on the 9.5" back(265 is uncomatible, and there is no new tyre in 275 width :( ). What would you suggest?
My main criteria is a silence grandtourer: low noise, sharp steering-feel, low fuelcons and the rest is fine enough as well. For me the Assy6 seems the obvious choice. Or shall I go with PS5 or PC/SC7?
car is a CLS 220d (2016)
I saw already a crazy-good video about tyre vs rim width(result is, a bit wider rim improves the grip, but the tyre width wont if the rim is not widened signifacntly as well), but it would be an awesome topic for you as well IMO. :)
What would you recommend for a BMW Z4m?
Looks like I cant get the Michelin 4s or the Conti7 in the correct size (Fr 225/45/18 Rr 255/40/18). Looks like I can only get PilotSport4 / SuperSport or Conti5 or Goodyear F1 Supersport in both sizes.
No track driving just on road.
Thanks
I'd have the F1 SuperSport personally, I'm a big fan of that tyre.
Now looks like the SportContact 7 is fully available in the UK in 18" 225/40 model as of March '23
Question is ..... for a Front wheel drive hot hatch in the UK, would you go Michelin PS5 or Conti SC7? Theyre near enough the same price. Is the SC7 a no brainer?
As much as I love the PS5 sidewall, I'd fit the SC7 at the same price if you like to drive.
Pleased that’s the response as they’re now ordered. Will submit a review. Thx
When it’s time to get new rubber for your VRS in the UK will you go PC6, PC7 or SC7 now it’s available in an 18 to fit the Skoda?
That's a good question! Of the three my heart would say SC7 but my head PC7 as I'm really curious about how it would feel.
Really the best choice is to try both!
Ha! My head and heart are saying the same. I’m in the UK also with a VRS. Last two sets have been PZ4, Asym 6. Amazing how much a change of tyres can alter the balance of the car. A couple of punctures in the Goodyears mean I’m changing early. I’ll put the review up soon. I’ll take your advice and try both :-)
Excited to read about your experiences!
How crucial do you think it is to stick with star marked tyres on a BMW M340i? The SportContact 7 is very appealing but with X-drive would you advise the use of a star marked tyre only?
I've never owned an X-Drive vehicle but there's plenty of reviews from many people who swap over to non-star tyres without any issue.
Thank-you! To be honest I've always struggled to believe the internet comments about non-star tyres not being made to a close enough tolerance to be compatible with X-drive so a set of SportContact 7's are now on order and due to be fitted later this week! Great information as always on this website!
let me know how you like them
Hi guys, i would like same advise...2019 Ford S-Max 2.0 Diesel 190 hp. After ContiSportContact 6 (26.000 km), Eagle F1 Assy5 (28.000 km) and Ecsta Ps71 (32.500 km), what next? Falken AZENIS FK520?
Tia & Drive safe!
The FK520 looks a bit soft in the sidewall which might make the s-max feel a bit boaty. The Michelin is the obvious one missing from your list!
Which has been your fav so far?
Any recommendations of new summer tires in dimension 205/40 R18 for Ford fiesta ST 2019? I bought the car last year and on the car there are still the factory Michelin's PS4.
First and main priority is the best possible grip in dry on B roads. If it would have also good grip in wet it would be even better but mainly I am pushing on selected B roads only in dry and when the tarmac is warm enough.
Regarding the price there aren't any limitations with budget.
For all answers I thank you in advance :)
Bridgestone Potenza Sport if it's available, failing that Asymmetric 5/6 or PremiumContact 6/7.
The PC6 is still my favourite handling modern tyre but goes give up a little in the wet.
PC6 is than your favorite, interesting.
So how would you than sort all mentioned tires if we look only to have as much as possible grip on B roads with closed curves? I want to have tires in whom I can have full confidence while driving fast on such roads (you know full throttle in middle of the curves that LSD can make the job what it's made for).
Lest anyone should think that I drive like that all the time. And I am normally a defensive driver and this is only occasionally on known B roads which I already drove a lot of times and in dry with tarmac than is warm enough.
If the road is warm, Bridgestone first probably, if not you'll probably want the PC7.
Great.
Thank you for your advices and of course I am looking forward to new videos on you channel.
2020 Honda Accord 2.0T 10AT FWD stage3 360ps.
What would you like recommended for better start (0-60mph)? Street car.
im looking on
Federal 595 RS-Pro
Conti SportContact7
FEDERAL Evoluzion ST-1
245-40-19
You'll generally want a tyre that doesn't need much heat, unless you plan on warming up your tyres every time. Of that list, the Conti would be best.
Hi Jonathan, hi TR team!
I'm struggling to decide the following:
I have a 2016 220d CLS with 255/40 rear and 285/35 front.
I've bought a Hankook S1 EVO3 to the front axle. They are fine. Now I have to replace the rear ones.
My goal is to have the most fuel-efficient and quietest tyre (in this huge size, IMO any tyre can grip well), to maintain good economy on the highway trips. Currently Pirelli P zeros are fitted...but the worst tyre ever in my life, never again. Budget is important, so thats why the S1 EVO3 seems the best option for the rears as well...but saw in some tests that noise and drga is quiet high.
Other option could be, to replace my wide stock rims to something narrower, like 245....since I don't really feel the benefit of the huge ones, but increasing the fuel consumption... and noise. :D
So please help me which 285 is a fie quiet, roll resistance, not expensive tyre? :)
I'm not too sure on prices, but usually the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric line shouldn't be much more than the Hankook and the latest version has a low rolling resistance.
Thanks! Sadly Assy6 is not existing in this size.
S1Evo3
FK510
Rainsport5
These are the fairly priced ones. Luxury brands are 30-40% more expensive (in Hungary :) ).
I'd probably take the Hankook or Falken, I'm not a huge fan of the RS5.
Thank you!!!!
I just bought the S1 Evo3. It looks almost funny, how huge the gaps in the thread. It seems the wider the yre gets, the more aquaplanning offsetted is. :D (IMO the threads are bigger compared to the actual contactpatch in this 285 wide, than a random 225 one) Excited to try https://uploads.disquscdn.c... it out next week :)
Let me know how you get on with them!
Well, it's fitted, I"ve mixed feelings.
Good: Very good at wet, I can accelarate almost the same as it was dry, Comfort level is fine, grips fine in dry
Bad: The sidewalls are too soft. The whole car is very whobbly when I do any sudden way-change. (the 245 wide Prelli Sottozero...a winter tyre.. was much better at this) I've overinflated with 0.2 BAR as well, to harden it up, bit still... from corner to corner, or in a harder corner, I just feel the whobble effect, making it feel like I'm going to die :D...but it still grips like hell, its just the feeling. :(
A lil bit on the loud side
So in general I think sooner or later I have to switch my wheel/tyres to a 245 for summer as well, since this 255-285 setup is just makes no sense. (Car came with this as stock, with the sport pack (CLS220d 2016)
Sounds about right, though I'm very surprised a winter tyre felt more direct unless it was low tread depth?!
The Hankook will bed in and stiffen up once you have some miles on them so expect some improvements :)
Hi, Great testing article! I need a set of summer performance tires for my BMW F80 M3 (same size tires as on your Supra test car). In the States, I can't seem to find the Conti 7 tires in my size. The OE tire is the Conti 5P. I can find the Michelin PS 4S in my fitment but I'm wondering how those compare to the Conti 6 and 5P. What do you recommend? Thank you!
Where in the US are you? Can you get the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 in your sizes? These are amazing summer tyres, though definitely not the best in the rain.
I'm in Washington State, not far from the Canadian border. I had my big box tire shop contact Continental USA and they said "not available yet with no ETA".
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 isn't available in my specific sizes (close, but I think I want to retain OEM staggered sizing).
My choices seem to be limited to the three BMW OEM tires (Conti 5P and Michelin PS 4S/Pilot Super Sport) along with Conti 6, Conti Extremecontact Sport 02, Firehawk Indy 500 and Potenza Sport.
I don't track my car and run dedicated winter tires when I can't run summer. I've been pretty happy with the Conti 5P OEM tires.
If you can get an OE PS4S that's where my money would go!
Thank you! The OE version has the *star* and I can get them. I'll go that route.
Let me know how you find them!
Just wanted to provide an update after riding on the PS4S srar-spec for a few months. Nice, smooth riding tire but doesn't feel as well connected to the road as my priot Conti 5P. Even wet traction (straight line acceleration) breaks loose easier. I'm contributing all of this to the new tread on the Michelin vs much worn on the Conti. Not unhappy, but mildly disappointed. Hopefully the Conti 7 will be available in my region the next time I need new summer rubber.
Thanks again for your excellent reviews and your willingness to help in the comments section.
Interesting, thanks for the update!
Reviewed some of your videos about UUHP / UHP tires which are truly great for better understanding the difference between the tested tires and what to look for when selecting a tire. We're looking into 245/45 ZR17 for a Dodge Stealth RT/TT Turbo in pristine condition and want to select a tire that does not compromise the 4 wheel steering/ 4 wheel drive.
This car corners like no other and we like to keep the car as much as original (not like our VR-4 which has Rays and Nittos) without compromising the grip and performance. Our car is preferably not driven in the rain so wee would look into a more slick like tire.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric seems to fit what we would need but we are curious about your appreciated feedback. Cheers LBZ
Hey! Judging by your spelling of tire I guess you're in the US. If that's the case I would aim for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3, it's a really fun road tire and great in the dry.
Looking for a set of tyres for my 2005 Boxster S, at 235/35R19 Front and 265/35R19 Rear they are a similar size to those on the Z4 coupe you used in the test. Not sure about going for Porsche N rated tyres or the SportContact7's. Unfortunately any 19's with an N rating are fairly old designs as Porsche only approve tyres for current models (but you still get people telling you 15 year old designs are the best because they have N written on the side)
Currently the car is on Michelins (Sport Cup 2 on the front, Super Sport rears both N2 / XL) which are a bit harsh for general use, would the XL rated SportContact7's be better or should I be looking at tyres which have a lower load rating? In this size if you want tyres that aren't XL the only option seem to be those old N rated ones. So I guess my question is does the improvement in tyre technology over 15 years beat having a tyre designed for the car?
Interesting questions, obviously without testing the N options for your car I'm guessing, but I would guess the SC7 would give you a good bump in wet grip, perhaps a little more comfort, and while it should match the dry performance I guess there's a small risk it'll be slightly slower to steer, depending on how optimised the N versions are.
It's a bit of a lottery with N tires.
Decided to go for the SportContact7s, getting them fitted @ Kwikfit after Christmas - one of the few suppliers that had the 235 fronts available plus they had a 15% off offer for 4 continental tyres which brought them down to a good price, a fair bit cheaper than any N rated tyres even Goodyear's which normally come out the cheapest of the N's and would have been my preferred N rated option for day to day use.
I'll be sure to review the SC7s once I get a few miles on them, but that might take some time at this time of year.
Excited to read what you think of them!
Would it be possible to measure cabin noise in future tyre tests? It is a bigger factor for me than external noise when I am choosing tyres and unfortunately the manufacturers don't seem to measure it.
I do when I have time to. Sadly it's a lot more time consuming than external. I usually do subjective noise too which should give you a good indication.
Thanks for the response. I'm sure the tests are very time consuming. Does it involve something fancier than a decibel meter inside the cabin? Could it be done at the same time as the external testing or would that be too fiddly? Auto express seem to be the only reviewers routinely measuring it.
To do it properly you need to analyse the pitch of the noise. There are some smart solutions. - https://www.instagram.com/p...
That's a fancy looking bit of kit! I hope you get time in your future reviews to properly measure cabin noise, it would set you apart from a lot of the other review websites.
Hi. As usual some fantastic reviews. I'm now in the market for new rubber and have 225-35-19s. The roads where l commute are in appalling condition so need a tyre that is not only UUHP but soaks up the bumps and pot holes. Recommendations ?
Hi Jonathan , Great review !
I know my vehicle ( vivaro 2016 crew cab remapped , on 225/55/r17s 101T, From Uk ) isnt in the same league as most other gents asking questions but clearly want to get the best I can .... was considering a few tyres and would like a honest opinion. Have been looking at the following tyres
1.Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
2.Continental Premium Contact 6
3.Continental SportContact 7 ( not available in 17's)
4.Continental ECOCONTACT 6
Have come from using 225/55/17 101t goodyear efficient grip 2 as I dont really carry any weight but as Im due a new set thought I would make the change to the correct load rating.
I realistically know you have to give on some aspects and a tyre can not excel in every category , but your honest feedback would be most welcomed.
Grip/handling in the wet and dry are most important to me tbh.
Thanks in advance
Ben
For a larger vehicle I would probably personally side with the Conti PC6 as it offers a little more support in the sidewalls than the others.
Hi Jonathan. Great test, as always.
It makes me curious about the ContisportContact 7, which is unfortunately only available for the front of my X5 M (mixed tyres sizes).
I would be very interested in your opinion, what I can expect when mixing ContisportContact 7 at the front and ContisportContact 5 at the rear. My aim is ideal precise steering, stable straight run for high speed on Autobahn. Bad idea? Should I better go for a complete set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4?
Many thanks, Werner (big fan from Germany)
I don't like the idea of mixing and I don't like the idea of the PS4 is steering precision is your goal. Do you have a Goodyear option?
My other options are
Nonrunflat (preferred)
- Goodyear Asymmetric 3
- Potenza Sport
- PS4S
- PZ4
- Hankook Evo3
Runflat
- PZ4
- Contisportcontact 5
- Dunlop Sport Maxx GT
What is in your opinion the best choice for precise steering?
Potenza Sport steering feel is outstanding, I'd take that over the Goodyear Asym 3 even if the wear on the BS is a bit heavy.
I had 4 (225/40R18) continental premium contact 6 and installed 4 goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 6 on my Seat Leon 1M Cupra R. The tires have excellent grip, are quiet and comfortable. On the other hand, I feel the car floating at high speed. They have very soft sidewalls and bad feedback from the road. Which tires do you advise to lose that false feeling? I like tires with stiff side flaps for hard feeling.
The Asymmetric 6 is one of the better ones of the group! But not as good as the Continental sadly. The Bridgestone Potenza Sport is the other good handling tyre but that seems to have quite high wear.
New tyres always feel a bit softer than worn, so I'd double check the pressures, maybe add a couple of extra PSI and wait for them to settle in. Failing that, back to the PC6!
I didn't go for the Potenza Sport because they wear out fast.
I'm using 2.6bar on all 4 tires.
What do you think of the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport?
There's plenty of videos and articles on the site with my thoughts on that particular tyre :)
Last question. Are the Goodyear F1SS reinforced on the side flaps than the old Bridgestone Potenza S001? That is, do they provide a more precise/direct steering?
I don't know I'm afraid. I've driven one size of S001 and it was very strong sidewall with good steering, then a different S001 I drove was weak sidewalled.
I decided to take a chance and buy 4x goodyear eagle f1 supersport. Now, it's a completely different car. The steering became more direct. The car was unstable with the Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 6 due to the side walls being too soft. I advise anyone who wants sports tires to opt for these Goodyear eagle f1 supersport!
Hi,
can you tell something about tyre wear, especially from the Bridgestone? How did it cope with track abusement? I own a 2020 Ford Mustang GT with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tyres on it (255/40R19 front and 275/40 R19 rear), and the Bridgestone could be my next tyre. The Conti SC7 are not available in this size. Michelin are good, but not worth the surcharge compared to the Bridgestone I think.
Or what other tyre would you recommend? The car is driven daily in dry and wet, some track visits (Nürburgring is just around the corner :-) ), mostly motorway and country road use.
Thank you!
I've made a video just on this pretty much, the bridgestone has very high wear on track, as the reviews on the site say too. Get the Goodyear if you want to enjoy the 'ring :)
Thanks for your reply! The Goodyear is not available in 275/40 R19 and doesn't seem to perform very well in the wet, which would be quite important for me (450 hp + RWD + Eifel weather).
I watched your video, but I'm not sure how comparable a FWD car to RWD is in terms of tyre wear? Track use is just occasionally, so daily performance is much more important. The Michelin is not bad and seems to have little tyre wear in daily use, but as you mentioned, it seems a bit sluggish and soft on the race track. And it is very pricey compared to the other tyres.
I've had high wear on RWD fitment of the potenza too. I guess if it's jsut the ring it should be better as it's not super high grip surface, but i'd still be cautious of the wear profile.
Auto Express made a Mini-Test with some UUHPs
https://reifenpresse.de/202...
Conti said the SC6 is not an UUHP, dunno if the SC7 is really an UUHP, same for the PZ4
I've argued with Conti about this before. I've no idea why they don't call it a UUHP, it starts in a few 18" sizes, it's mostly 19" and above and its main rival is the PS4S.
The SC6 and SC7 is a UUHP tire by modern definition.
Especially when you consider the SC6 had terrible tread life at launch.
At launch, do you mean the time at release in the tyre market or the exclusive launch with the Honda Civic Type R?
The SC6 and SC7 are above PC6/SC5/SC5P so I would also say it´s UUHP.
The PZ4 is for me something between, but closer to UHP. Maybe the PZC4 can be called an UUHP
Hi, thank you for providing those test results, I would like to know for a Panamera 21 inches, which one is better for daily uses, pz4 or ps4s?
If you look at the balance of test results, the PS4 seems to score better overall
How does the rim protection provided by the tyres on this test compare?
I believe the rim protection should be noted in the video!
I watched it start to finish, couldn't see it anywhere.
I've no idea how I forgot that! Here's my notes:

Hi!
I have a 2011 Jaguar XKR with the 20" OE Dunlop tyres. Would I be right to expect that a more up to date tyre should in general be an all round improvement? How much have tyres moved on in the last decade?
My baseline seems to keep coming back to the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric. How much better would something like the Michelin PS4S be? I don't want to give away too much performance but I would rather not have a very noisy, uncomfortable tyre, which wouldn't suit the character of the car so much.
Cheers.
What's the OE tyre? I imagine an up to date tyre would be a large improvement at least in wet grip and rolling resistance, and something like the PS5 should bring noise and comfort improvements too.
Not much has changed in the last 10 years of dry grip though :)
Thanks so much for answering my questions. The current tyres are:
Front: 255/35 R20 97Y Dunlop Sport Maxx XL J (true OE)
Rear: 285/30 R20 99Y Dunlop Sport Maxx RT(similar to OE)
These tyres have a lot of tread but are getting on a bit (8-11 years). They really should go.
The current offerings in these sizes seem to be in the process of introducing new models and getting a matching set of the new ones is currently tricky :(
What would be the trade offs between the currently available Goodyear Asymmetric 5/Michelin PSS4 level of tyre and the Michelin PSS4S or even the Continental SportContact 7? The Contis are well priced where I am :)
Back on the topic of progress, car reviews seem to be getting shorter and shorter dry braking distances. Is this more down to the car then. I was expecting it to be more down to better tyres.
QUICK UPDATE:
I just went for the Contis. First impressions is that they are nice match to the car - not noisy, not harsh. First hurdle managed! Steering feels direct and seems to suggest that there is rubbery grip. The old tyres were also pretty direct but they felt hard and uncommunicative. Going from old tyres to new is bound to feel better. Let's see how they feel with more use.
Thanks for the great, detailed review. Saved me quite some money over the PS4S and there is probably no trade offs I will notice. Makes me want to go and drive for the sake of it again :)
Glad you're enjoying them, look forward to the review on the site sometime :)
Thank you for the test/review, I have a question. What should I buy for Skoda Superb liftback (FWD, 140 kW) in size 235/45 R18? I narrowed down my options to:
- Continental PremiumContact 6 98W XL FR
- Continental SportContact 7, 98W XL
- Continental SportContact 7, 98W XL ContiSilent (it is worth the extra 15 € per tyre?)
- Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, 98Y
- Michelin Pilot Sport 5, 98Y
No trackdays, just a family car for long trips used over allowed speed limits. :-)
Thanks.
I think for everyday use the Goodyear is a very good option. Drived it also some months ago and was satisfied, compared the the Bridgestone Potenza RE002 I drived before.
Glad you're enjoying them :)
Yeah, I did ;)
Good steering, not noisy, very good performance in wet and dry.
But last month I changed the car, so I don´t have it anymore
Now I´m on Conti SC6 in 235/35R19, but I think for comparing I need to drive other tyres on my actual car.
Hi Jonathan!
Wanted to ask you if a softer sidewall tire like the turanza t005 would increase ride comfort compared to assymetric 6 or contisport 7 at 235/35/19 for a golf gti mk8 and which one would you suggest! Many thanks!
It should would. Obviously the flip side of that is you reduce your handling performance, and on a car like a GTI it depends on your priorities. The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 is also a very good, comfortable tyre.
Really great review. I'm in the US, so can't get the new Conti. I'm about the replace the tires on a 2009 V8 Vantage (manual Coupe, Sports Pack). Sizes are 235/40-19 and 275/35-19, weight is 3600 lbs and weight distribution is 49F / 51R. I don't track it, though I'd love to. I prioritize steering feel, response and handling balance/adjustability over noise and ride comfort. From your review, I was thinking the Bridgestone Potenza Sport would be my choice. As long as they're not harder riding or louder than the RE050 on the car now (they're not the originals, but are OEM replacements), which I know aren't generally loved, I'll be fine with the ride and the noise. The main reason I was leaning toward the Potenza is your commentary about steering feel and response -- that the Potenza is very good in those areas, while the PS4S is not. That said, I just read another tire test (EVO), and it says the steering feel and balance of the PS4S is great (Mustang GT test car). My favorite type of driving is quickly through the twisty stuff, though I do a fair amount of interstate/motorway driving also. Which tire would you choose?
I have just seen that evo test, some of the results surprised me, especially the aquaplaning results.
Based on my experience, I would also side with the Bridgestone. However if you are US based you have the options of even better steering tires, such as the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3!
What would you recommend for a 370z? I run 18s I currently run 265/40/18 and 295/35/18 Nitto Invos and 265/35/18 295/30/18 R888r but looking to replace my tires I do spirited driving and road trips with autocross twice a year
Ever tried the Supercar 3 / 3r?
They don’t have 295/35 from what I’ve looked up my rears are 18x11 so preference on 295 so I’m not stretching tires
Why is the rolling resistance of the Potenza Sport so high? In your 2021 test, it was lower than the rolling resistance of the Goodyear SuperSport and Michelin PS4 S. It makes no sense :(
In short, we don't know. Ran twice to confirm the data. Obviously this is a different size.
Oh, that's strange :( And, subjectively, which UUHP (Michelin/Bridgestone/Conti or maybe Pirelli) tyre would you recommend if I want to decrease a bit the fuel consumption I have now with the Goodyear Supersport?
I love the handling of this tyres, but the fuel consumption has increased a lot with them (from the PS4), and the fuel is so expensive right now haha. (I have 225/40 R18).
If it's not going to make a difference, I'll buy the GY Supersport again.
Thanks :DD
Rolling resistance gets better with wear, so when you swap worn for new there's usually a significant jump! Apart from that, I'd dig into the EU label as that's pretty accurate for the RR of the tyre.
Well, they are not new, I have been with them 12000Km and they're done haha That's why I have to change ^^
About the EU label, sadly it's D for all the UUHP tyres (PS4 S, Supersport and Potenza Sport). But thanks anyway, I know it's a difficult question to answer haha
Why are all the lights in the car on the dash, on the outside of the car etc always flashing?
Outside due to frame rate and the led lights out of sync.
On the dash as we have systems turn off and it's a golf 8 so it likes to moan about things.
Are the Nankang screechy?
Odd question perhaps, but for a fun driftable progressive tyre, I'm now looking for a tyre that doesn't shout 'accident incoming' just because we're having a little safe fun with the car moving around a bit....
If not, any other suggestions?
Thanks!
I believe the answer you're looking for is in this very video!
From about 8:10 the dry car to car footage has no own sound so not helping if that was the Nankang.
Is the in-car presenting in the dry done on the Nankang? If so it's ok...
I can't remember what tyre I was on for the in car, sorry
Can i fit conti's to a Focus ST if they are designed for Mercedes? These have a lower rolling resistance than the generic Conti's of the same tyre and cheaper on some sites. I don't see any reason why not but wanted to make sure.
You can, you'll likely be giving up wet performance for that improved rolling resistance though!
What tire would you recommend for the size 215/40-17? My car is an Ibiza Cupra from 2016 and I go to the Nurburgring once a year. The Bridgestone seems to be the best in my size but also has alot of wear on the track. What is the tire to choose?
Asymmetric 6 if you can get it!
Just ordered a set, looking forward to pushing them at the ring.
lmk how you find them!
Hello Jonathan, great review. I appreciate your hard work making tests like this. I have a question for u. Currently i drive BMW 330i xdrive and want to swap originally mounted Pirelli P Zero runflats cuz i honestly hate them ?
I need 225/40 r19 front and 255/35 rear. Cant decide between Michelin PS4s star marked, new Conti SportContact 7 or Goodyear Asym. 6. I dont do any track days so i only need a well rounded tire thats also comfy and good in wet condotions. Do u have any suggestions for me from tires i mentioned? Or any other?
Sry if my english isnt top notch like ur test ?
Your english is great! As you have an OE option of a great tyre, in this case I'd probably take that, but really you'd be more than happy with all three!
Thank you very much. Keep up the great work ? cheers from Slovakia
Hi Jonathan, amazing review as always! The CS7 seems really outstanding and in my mind a real alternative to the Goodyear F1SS... In this regards I now have a Jag F-Type V6 convertible (pretty heavy and powerful toy) and I'm going to change tires in the next future. Considering that I use the car only on weekends and I track it only 2-3 times max per year (but I often drive it on alpine passes in summers), which tire would you suggest? Is the F1SS too much for the this type of use?
I'm not sure why the F1 SS would be too much, it's a road tyre afterall. I've no idea which will work better on an F-Type, if you're only ever driving in the dry I guess it would be pretty close!
I'd say it's really close to a Supra 3.0 in terms of power, weight and tires so what works for the Supra should work for the F-Type. I'm just a little scary that the F1SS could be difficult to handle if I drive in the wet or when temp is below 10 C°. What's your opinion about this?
Possibly all tyres will be difficult in cold wet conditions on a car like the f type :) But they're still a road tyre and still very good in the wet compared to a track tyre, where you really would struggle.
Ok, I think it's quite explanatory!! Thanks Jonathan for the amazing review and looking forward for the next test!!
Informative video as always and much appreciated. Who’s facility did you use?
This was at Contidrome in Germany.
Again a great review, much Thank for it :)
The Conti also won in the test of the sport auto magazine, it seems to be the benchmark actually.
I´m not native english so I have to ask whether you mix the Budget tyres like one model on front, another model in the rear or were all 4 tyres are Star Performer or Goodride?
It was a mix :) Neither brand made tyres for all 4 wheels.
Where is the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3?
Couldn't get it in the sizes in time sadly.
and Hankook Ventus S1 EVO Z?
I won't be testing it as my test is 17" but it has been tested here - https://www.tyrereviews.com...
Nothing impressive. I had them and took them off and sold them.
How come Pirellis PZ4 is not tested among the UUHP tyres? They are the most preferred Tyre on sportscars today. No available size?
They're not available in this size, I did try!
Fair enough. Thanks for getting back to me. I was curious as most supercars use Pirelli yet were not even on the list. :-)
In a similar test back in July 2019, the Eagle F1 SS outperformed the Michelin PS4S in wet handling. However, in this test, it performed significantly worse. Any ideas why?
https://uploads.disquscdn.c...
Nope. I've wondered this myself and discussed it with goodyear and we can't work out why it did so well in that test. It might be a function of the water depth at that particular track
Hello. Great video again!
Do you have any experience with the PS91?
Yes, tested it in 2019, see https://www.tyrereviews.com...
Thank you!
Hi!
Thanks again for the superb and thorough test.
What do you recon, according to all the press releases we've got so far, how would a Pilot Sport 5 compare to the 4S and the Conti Sportcontact 7? Are the CSC7 even available in R18 size? (PS4S and PS5 are, I know.)
(I'm thinking 225/40 R18 tyres for our "optimized" Octavia RS TSI.)
Thanks for the help! :)
Thank you!
Thank you for the great work Jonathan it is much appreciated! Now that you are based in North America I feel I can ask, do you know if (or suspect that) technology from the SportContact 7 will trickle down into a new generation of Conti ExtremeContactSport (North America only I believe?)?
Given the two different requirements of the regions I'm not sure there will be a trickle down as such, but I'm sure Conti are working on a new version of the ESC and it will build on what is already an excellent tire!
Hi Jonathan,
could you maybe tell us more about the degradation on a dry circuit, you only really talked about the Goodyear and Bridgestone. The SC6 was also very bad in that point, is the new Conti better and also trackday friendly? Or is the Goodyear just far better than the others? Would also be great to get a review of the new Yokohama AD09 and how that compares to the Conti SC7. And maybe also the the then new PS5S. Maybe also on two cars, like FWD/AWD square setup + RWD staggered one.
Thanks for another great review, you are simply the best!
Unfortunately we only get to do a handful of laps usually due to time, so unless a tyre does something outstanding or odd there's not enough data to give a good impression.
Obviously when I'm doing tyres designed for track work I do way more, but these are not that!
Jonathan, outstanding as usual!
Thank you so much for what you bring to the table when it comes to tyre tech. I do have a question, with your experience under those conditions that you tested how do you think a M BMW OEM PS4S* would have performed in your lineup , Specifically dry handling and braking?
Again brilliant tyre journalism!
Thank you.
It depends what vehicle the * tyre was aimed at. For this car, it has the BMW * PSS, which would have certainly held its own in the dry but been one of the worse in the wet.
If you could fit the M3/4 PS4S* on this car (you can't) I feel like it would be the leader in the dry and midpack in the wet, but they're guesses.
Jonathan,
Thank you for your prompt reply!
Thank you Jonathan. One of your better efforts in my appraisal. What I particularly like about it is the richly textured subjective appraisal. Unless the limits are dangerously low, behaviour around the limit strikes me as of more significance than raw grip numbers.
I do wish that the SC7 were to be available in 165/65-14, 185/60-14 & 185/60-13 for my four ancientish toys.
Thank you! Sadly you might be waiting a while for those sizes :(
An NA MX5 tyre test on the OEM 14" daisy wheels would be really fun! :) I think Bridgestone made a reproduction of the original tyres for sale in Japan.
it would be really fun to do too. Sadly supply and demand :(
Wear is something I've been trying to find a solution for, but for a test like this a fair wear test would easily be over 100,000 euros, so I'm afraid for now, unless you're willing to lend some money, the wear tests will be left to ADAC and Auto Bild who have more support to do them :)
You're correct, it was at Contidrome, and while there might be the smallest of home advantages, other testers have found a similar advantage at other facilities. Sadly there are no true independent facilities anymore, as most tyre companies have garages and run plenty of testing at places like Idiada (which is nearly impossible for the media to test and film there due to the nature of the facility.)
There's an article on the site listing who I test with and who wins, it's about 50%, but it's also logical as the people who want to help test are the people with the newest products. The second placed PS4S is 4 years old remember...
Weird that Conti is so much better at wet handling, yet one of the worst in aquaplaning. Any logical explanation?
Wet handling is very shallow water, aquaplaning is very deep (too deep in my opinion, 8mm, but that's a conversation for another day)
They're actually very different tests of a tyre, handling mostly compound and aquaplaning mostly tread design and depth.
