Michelin Pilot Sport 4 VS Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 VS Continental PremiumContact 6

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 and Continental PremiumContact 6 are three of the most researched tyres on Tyre Reviews, and as a result, perhaps three of the most difficult tyres to choose between.

While there's plenty of test data online, I wanted to go one better. To find out exactly what each tyre is like to use in the real world, I've got a set of each in 225/40 R18 92Y XL, three matching sets of wheels, and have covered thousands of miles to work out exactly which tyre is best at what.

Tyre Data - 225/40 R18 92Y XL

Tyre DOT Code Weight
Continental PremiumContact 6 0320 LM5N D75F 9.15kgs
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 0520 DM5N MT1R 9.15kgs
Michelin Pilot Sport 4 1220 FTCR 06MX 9.65kgs

    How do, great vid,
I am now after new tyres for my leon FR, (mapped and played with, I have an mr2 for track. I do like to drive my cars fairly hard)
Do i go for the pilot sport 5, eagle f1 AS5, or the F1 super sport? I do use the car everyday doing 40 miles and like wet grip, not seen anything on the PS5 yet

PS5 is a total unknown to me, so obviously I'd buy that :D Asym 5 is a safe bet always, but the 6 is now out which if you can get I'd probably get that too and keep swapping them

Hi! I really enjoy the comparison but I'd like to ask for an advice. I have to change the tyres of my Fiesta ST (205/40-17). Now I'm on Bridgestone RE050A but they are no longer available. I love the stiff sidewall of these tyres and I want something similar. I don't care about wet performance, I want something strong in handling, steering precision and dry performance. Which would you recommend between Goodyear Eagle 5, Conti Premiumcontact 6 and Yokohama Fleva?

    Thank you in advance!

I've not driven the Yoko, but of the other two the Conti is more sporty like the Bridgestone

    Hi!
I'd like to ask for an advice on new summer tyres for the next summer season of 2022.
I drive a MY14 Octavia VRS (162 TSI), slightly "optimized", slightly lowered.
My first choice was the PS4S, but in my currency they cost 60.000 a piece, which is roughly 165 EUR / 140 GBP. (A bit too expensive for my taste.)
Other candidates are the Goodyear F1 Supersport (99 / 85) or the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (same price range), maybe GY F1 Eagle Asy 5.

    What would you recommend?
Is that price gap real, is it that big in the UK as well between the F1 SS and the PS4S?
Is any of these candidates available in XL version or maybe rim protection+XL version?

    Thanks a lot in advance!
(Keep up the videos, very educational, love to watch them.)

    Edit:
Forgot to add the size: I'm looking for 225/40 R18 tyres for 7.5x18 wheels.

What do you want from the tyres? Why not the PremiumContact 6? That's what I run on my VRS!

        Hey, thanks for the answer!
Honestly: The best bang (performance) for the buck.
Our baby daughter is 5 weeks old. I want her to be in utmost safety in all conditions. I don't want to race others ('coz that's illegal, and I want to get home in one piece), occasional spirited driving may occur, but not that often.

Last summer tyres were 225/35 R19 M Pilot SSs, but I've sold the 19" Xtremes for a slightly better comfort of a 18" rubber.

Dry and wet performance is crucial equally as the car is daily driven.

I hope I could get all the infos together.

Why not Contis? All friends with similar cars drive PS4S tyres or SC2s, but the latter is not an option, obviously... Previous car had Contis, were not that great. (Debica Presto UHPs came after them, were much better.)

            Thanks, I've watched it again.
Now I'm more biased towards the GY Asymetric 5 and the Pilot Sport 4.
The Conti PC6 didn't finish that well in your test to be considered. :/

I think I'll decide from this two as I see them quite similar. Price will decide I suppose.

Thanks again for the help and for bringing up the video.

What do you recommend for a Mégane 3 tourer?
Currently have the pc6 the car had when I bought it used and coming from the pc5 on my previous hatchback I nearly killed myself once when the left wheel aquaplaned for about 100m on the highway at speed and rain level I was previously comfortable with. Fortunately I have great skill at doing nothing and letting the Esp do it's thing. I feel these are not as good in this situation and the older pc5.

The Asymmetric 5 is always a good all round tyre, should give you a little more comfort and aqua resistance than the PC6

Thank you for the quick reply! One more question. What do you think about XL tires? I can't seem to find either the PS4 or the Asymmetric 5 in stock in my area for my wheel dimmensions (205/50R17) in the recommended renault speed/load rating (something like 89V I believe). Both the AS5 and the PS4 are only in stock in XL (93Y). Will there be any downsides in going for a XL?

        #7088
        1. TyreReviews inlin3 archived

No, I don't think there will be any. In theory you might see reduced comfort but if the tyres aren't made in the unusually low rating, it's not an option. You'll be happy with either I'm sure

Hey there, I replaced my Pilot Sport 4 (Tesla spec) few days ago for the Continental Premium Contact 6 tyres. So far very disappointed.. They are extremely noisy every hole or bump is entering the cabine high volume. It feels like a overinflated football sound that’s very hearable. Besides the the sportiness of the car is totally gone. On a quick lane change test it feels like the car is leaning over the sidewalls and get bounced back hard.. it even feels dangerous to get bounced back at high autobahn speeds. Is this behavior anyone noticed? Maybe the high pressure Tesla’s need (3.2 bar) doesn’t do these tyres any good? Its a Tesla Model 3 dual motor with tyre size 235/45/18.

    #6946
    1. TyreReviews TeslaM3 archived

Wow, 3.2 bar must be near the max inflation pressure for the tyre, and will certainly be adding to the comfort issues! I feel like Teslas are one of the cars that benefit more from an OE tyre project as they have quite unique demands, so I'm not sure what to suggest on this one, sorry

Thanks for the reply! Few weeks later and Euromaster admitted something is wrong with this combination. One of the employees joined me for a small trip and noticed the first minute something is wrong and that was with only 50 kM/h. Once entering the highway it didnt need any further explanation.

They will take the Conti's back without charge and replace them next week for Michelin Pilot Sports 4 To (Tesla spec) tyres.

The Continentals might be good tyres but not when inflated to 3+ bar. Also thumbs up for Euromaster for having correct afterservice!

I am running on 225/40/18 Michelin PS4 on a Renault, but am finding them too hard and noisy, particularly when driving in bumpy roads. Literally killing the fun of driving.

You could move to something like a Primacy 4, however you will get the biggest difference by dropping to 17 or even 16" wheels, if they fit over your brakes.

    Hi,

I've been trying to decide between the PS4 and the Asymmetric 5 for the rear of my 2 series. It currently has asymmetric 5s all round so I think that may be the option to go for. Something I was wondering though is, no tyre site states that the A5s are run flats, its not mentioned in reviews either but it suggests that they are on the Goodyear website. If they are, performing how they do surely that should easily make them top of the pile?

    Cheers for any help

I'm sure they make runflat version of the tyre, just make sure that's what you buy. All the reviews are for the non-runflat version :)

Hey, first of all - amazing work. I have a fairly low powered car, 120hp Mazda 3, that will not see any track days. However, looking for the best summer tire possible in the name of safety in everyday and autobahn driving, and of course the enjoyment of a twisty road. My car came with 215/45R18 PS3 that are on their way out. Technically not a problem to get the PS4, however there are the AS2 that are 160EUR less per set and falken FK510 that are even lower, and even ZE310 that are almost half price. I know the Ziex are a vastly different tyre - adding them for the sake of argument. However, my question is generally how do tyre properties “scale” with a car’s HP and size? Are PS4 still an objectively superior tyre compared to the rest I listed for such a vehicle, or we way are deep into the are of diminishing returns? (The selection of tyres is based on the availability in that size.) In general, a video in the topic of low HP and smaller cars (e.g. a 100hp compact) vs high HP, larger, heavier vehicles (e.g. a Tesla) and how tyres behave on both would be super interesting to me - just a thought.

    #6556
    1. TyreReviews Boris archived

Generally grip is grip, so if a tyre is best in one size you can be sure it will be the best, or near the best in another size. That said, in recent tests the raw grip difference between the PS4 and the FK510 isn't huge, so if it's a huge saving that might be the smartest option.

    Hey Jonathan,

Your reviews and videos are really helpful, thank you. How do performance tyres like these compare to tyres like the primacy 4? I am struggling to choose my next set of tyres for my Audi A4 with s line suspension and 18 inch wheels (245/40/18). It's a 2.0TDI so not particularly sporty. I am currently leaning towards the Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 5, but could be tempted by something like the primacy 4 if the ride is more comfortable. How do tyres like the primacy 4 perform at this size? It seems I can't even get the good year efficient grip performance in this size, which makes me think they may not perform so well.

As I've not tested this yet, the answer is that I sadly don't know. In theory the primacy would be fine in your size, and offer improved comfort over a UHP tyre, how much I can't tell you, sorry.

A lot of the Continental tyres don't seem to offer much in the way of wheel rim protection. I'm regreting fitting the CS6 in 255/40 to 19x8.5" wheels. You only have to lightly touch against a kerb and the wheel rim is scratched. Goodyear Asymmetrics seem to have a lot wider protection strips.

Hi, I'm driving a W213 E250 mercedes E class and so far I'm amazed by the recommendations from tyre review! My car is coming 2 years old and because I'm extremely particulars about tire noise, I've since tried 4 different sets and brands base on 19 inch staggered so just sharing for those who are as fussy as me. First set was OEM Michelin Primacy 3 ZP (Run flat) but I find it too noisy and hard so I changed to Yokohama V552 for front and V551 for rear as they do not have matching size. However, Yoko side walls are way to soft to handle the car weight, comfort was compromised and you can feel the car over the smallest stones or uneven road surface... so I gave up and changed to Bridgestone T005A. T005A was indeed a quiet and reasonable comfort tyre but too risky for wet conditions....there's a few occasions that nearly kissing trees and road railing during rainy days. I give them up immediately after the launch of Goodyear F1A5. So far the eagle is good. Comfortable and quiet but not after 20k km of usage... The tires are now a bit loud (might be due to non-rotation since it is staggered size) I'm hoping to get something more quiet and comfortable so hoping Tire Review is able to provide right answers. Else, I'll have to take the F1A5 again as so far that's 1 of the best options. Thanks in advance and pls note that the above statement was made purely out of my own handling experience with those rubbers and just sharing my 2 cts worth.

So HP5 is an idea? You said in your 205/55/16-test, ìt`s one of the tires with the most sporty feel.
        Thank you for your help!

          Any time :)

If you can get the HP5 in the correct size I'd go for that, they seemed to hold up on track well but I think they will have quite high wear, but I don't suppose you'll be doing a lot of miles so that won't be an issue!

Photos when the car is finished please!

Old piktures, But the body ist still ok. Killed the engine on the Hockenheimring bevore 14 years. After that I had no time and no money for it. Now I bought a lot of parts and started to work on it. But it will take some time to get finished.
Thanks for the consultation and keep your good work on!

I'm having a hard time picking between the PS4 PC6 and EagleF1 you reviewed.
I drive an '03 BMW 525i Touring and was looking at viking protech as a budget option. its not a fast or sporty car to be honest. then i decided against that and started reading up on Primacy 4 as I've had the P3 on my Mondeo and liked them.. After watching your review I kind of want to try the Continentals but am worried they would be too loud and hard on the suspension (car has the original sports suspension on it). What would you recommend out of the three?

I think the Asym 5 will have the balance you want :)

Hi, I can confirm that Michelin PS4 is too soft, if you take the corners very hard, the sidewall is not hard enough. I use them on the front wheels on a Bmw 320d E46, 225 40 18. And keep in mind that I inflate them to 2.8 bars, much more than the Bmw recommends, because otherwise, the tyres would be even softer. But the worst experience I had was with Dunlop SportMaxx RT2, mounted on the front wheels, they were horribly soft, in hard corners, they simply run on the lateral wall. Very dissapointing tyre. I attached a picture with the Michelin and one with Dunlop to see what I mean https://uploads.disquscdn.c... https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Many thanks for finding all that out. Went into my local Ford dealer today, they had a brand new Fiesta ST2 with 17" wheels which had just arrived from the factory, it did indeed have the Pilot Sport 4 205/45 ZR17 DT1 tyres on so they must have dropped the Super Sports from the Fiesta ST. Will get the DT1's ( 642416 ), hopefully a bit better in the wet than the Super Sports. Many thanks again for your help.

I'll finish my comment here ! Got a Fiesta ST MK 8 which came with Michelin Supersports 205/45 ZR 17 ( 88 Y ) which are great in the dry but a bit iffy in the wet. Looking at PS4 as replacement but there's 2 versions on the Michelin website, one which has an A rating in the wet (product number 149173) and one that has a B rating in the wet ( product number 642416 ), the one with a B rating in the wet has DT1 in its description which I think means new tread ?

      1. TyreReviews Glenn archived

You are correct that DT1 means "improved tread pattern" in Michelin speak, so it's interesting they've dropped a wet grip category. I'll ask Michelin directly and report back

Michelin have provided a wonderfully detailed answer! Pasted below

            ===

Ref your enquiry, neither of the tyres has a specific manufacturer marking but there is a story behind them……..

149173 is designed as the replacement market fitment for cars with the same 205/45 R 17 tyre size all round, but it is also the recommended front tyre for the Alpine AS1 and has to work well as a pair with the rear which is a 235/45 R 17.

642416 DT1 indeed has a different tread, which is specifically tuned for the Ford Fiesta ST 2018. Sometimes the requirements of these specific vehicle tunings change the performance of a tyre in another area just a little and it seems that this has just pushed the tyre over the threshold into wet B grade.

Practically, the performance of the tyres will be extremely close. My advice is if the car is a Fiesta, use 642416, if not 149173.

I have a z4m coupe, would you considering mixing tyre model front to back? I'm thinking f1 supersport for the 225 wide fronts: sharper steering feel and turn in, dials out some understeer, for the odd trackday the fronts get most punishment. And then asymmetric 5 on the rear: the z4m coupe has a bit of a stiff rear end so softer tyre smooths out the bumps and makes the rear more predictable, also a little less rear grip so more fun. What do you think?

Sorry I missed this. I understand your theory, but without testing it I'm not sure how it would feel. IF you've already done this, let me know how it is!

I had four brand new F1A3 fitted to my Audi A4 (FF) back in 2016, and strangely found the front pair had worn out so quickly (after less than 11,000km / 6,800 miles) that I had to have them replaced before the MOT scheduled for December 2019, while the rear pair still have 90% treadepth. I bought a new pair of PS4 and fitted to the front deliberately to test the Michelin, and after 5 months (May 2020) I had the front and rear rotated at the time of brake fluid change. Guess what, since the rotation with the F1A3 back in the front axle, I found the handling feel is better than the PS4 !! Well done Goodyear with an outdated F1A3 beating the newer PS4 by some margin. (I think it would be unfair to compare a worn pair of F1A3 against a new pair of PS4 at the time of replacement last December, but in fact the worn pair of F1A3 gave me a very similar feel to the new pair of PS4 !!)

Handling will be better, but I'm going to assume the comfort levels were lower? That seems to be the usual trade, and the PS4 seems to have moved more towards comfort this time.

Cannot really comment on the comfort level, as i had replaced all 4 suspensions to Bilstein a few years ago....

I've used the PS4 in 18 and 17 wheels, both cars are front wheel drive. The heaviest one (17'') would eat two sets in the front for each in the back. In the other car they almost lasted the same on both axles. The lightest car had the tyres last a lot longer on the front axle compared to the other car, but not as much on the rear.

I guess it's a very weight sensitive tyre from my experience.

      #5859
      1. TyreReviews Daniel archived

That seems to be the case, heavier / more powerful cars seem to use them faster. Which is an obvious statement, but the delta between high wear and low wear seems bigger than in a lot of tyres

Another good review. I don't own one car with >18 inch wheels so this is definitely relevant. Thanks.
As it stands, I'm on PS4 on all 3 cars. What surprised me the most was wear. The Audi came with Cont Sport Contact 5 (in 2015) Got 18k out of those tyres before they went. I'm now on my 2nd set of PS4 and I don't think i'll get much more than just over 10k on the front. Bar that, excellent tyre especially in the wet. Will likely continue with that. And yes, I've had a right moan at Michelin about not putting the 4S on the market for us in the UK. Thanks again Jon.
(oh and please, next test for us minnows in tyres - fast road/track tyres. Toyo/Yoko/Michelin PSS etc??)

The wear on the PS4 seems a little random, some people get excellent mileage from them, but others seem to get very average wear, it's quite unusual for a Michelin tyre.

Internal compound update or different production places lines? Maybe you can ask Michelin...Wear should figure in the new EU tyre labels from May 2021...

But the reason "very weight sensitive tyre" can be the first fundamental reason, indeed.
