You asked, we listened. Here's our thoughts on how the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S compares to the Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

We tried to make a 5 minute video to explain the differences, but sadly we failed and this video is 9 minutes. If you're not a tyre geek, but are curious about the differences between the two tyres, feel free to skip to the conclusion at 6:10 as that covers most of it.

    Hi, I have BMW X5M 2018 F85
    It came with PSS*
My options are either to buy the same PSS* or go for PS4S generic
I do daily commute and long journey in UK so has mixture of wet and dry. Never do track but does go to german autobans occasionally

What do you advise? PSS* or PS4S?

    Thanks

PS4S generic will have a lot more wet grip and better comfort, so this is where my money would go.

Hi there, am looking to replace PSS* (OE) tyres on my m2 - options at local dealers only seem to be PS4S (non OE) or Sport Cup 2* (OE). Car is mainly road driven with occasional day on track. Would you suggest either of these two options or have an alternative you'd recommend?

Great, thank you for that - was just what I was looking for!

I'd pick the Asym 5 over the PSS as it's a better all round tyre, and a fair bit better in the wet. There's plenty of other tests on the site which will help confuse you more with other options too!

Hi. I have a 2014 Lexus IS250 and I was wondering what tire is best suited for my car. I was thinking of getting either the pilot sport 4S or the pilot sport all season 4? What are the big differences between the two tires and how would they change the driving characteristics? Thanks.

4S a little better in the dry and wet, AS4 much better in snow and ice. I've not actually compared them properly in the dry and wet so can't give a huge amount of detail, sorry

I have a 2009 Lexus SC430 currently riding on Bridgestone Driveguard RFT's. Thinking of swapping out the RFT's and installing Pilot Sport 4S all around. Do you recommend, and would I notice a big difference in the way the car rides and handles? Thanks

You'll notice more grip, especially in the wet, and much better comfort. Handling might feel a bit softer, but it's a worthy trade.

Anything that does well in braking should do well in traction, so you can reverse some of the tests :)

Hi, great video :) Looking for some advice please. Apparently PS4s are not available for size 255/35/18? I've got a z4 e89 with front 225/40/18 and rear 255/35/18. I was thinking to do PS4s on front and rear PSS or PSS all around? I think I have the option of PS4 all round but I think there are inferior compared to PS4s and PSS? Or buy other alloy wheels to be able to fit PS4s? :D TIA

As great as the PS4 is, if you're changing all 4 I'd swap to a tyre that I can match front and rear like the Asymmetric 5

Hi, thanks in advance for your time. In my country (Mexico) I cant get the PS4s in size 18, so Im left to choose between the PSS and the PS4. I want the more sporty experience of the PSS, but is it drastically louder then the PS4? or nothing to be concerned about?

The PS4 can get noisy when worn, so I doubt there's much difference at all. Also look up the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport

Hi, I have a AWD Merc C43 and just had my PS4S replaced which i loved. The dealership has put PS4S on the front and PSS on the rear. Thought this was unusual so called a rep at Michelin who said they will be ok, advising that I will notice more grip but may wear a little quicker but are better than the PS4S ? I wans't sure on their opinion given they know the dealership and after watching your video. I now feel like I should get the dealership to change the rears to PS4S ?

    #5765
    1. TyreReviews Scott archived

While it's not the end of the world, ideally you should match where you can. The MPS4S has more wet grip, so the car might be setup for oversteer in the wet now.

It might be the case that your rears aren't available in MPS4S

      #5766
      1. Scott TyreReviews archived

Thanks for the reply. The MPS4S are available next day but the dealership thought they would use PSS as they had them in stock... They advised a mix up with spare parts and will change if I want. I wasn't going to change them initially but after watching your video that the MPS4S are a better tyre I started to think differently and expect the PSS will wear faster and I will need to change the rears before the fronts.

If they'll change them without a fight, there's no reason not to have matching tyres :)

Hi. Just watched your PSS v PS4S vid. I’m upgrading from PSS to PS4S on my E92M3 (Alpine Edition so slightly lower suspension). Current tyres are F 245/35 R19 R 265/35 R19 and struggling to find fronts. I noticed you fitted slightly larger (F255 R275) - would these be ok for my car.
Also, I can get PSS in original size for the front so any thoughts on mixing PSS front with PS4S rear.
    Your thoughts much appreciated.

    #5711
    1. TyreReviews Tony archived

Hmm, ideally you wouldn't mix them, especially if you're already doing all four.

The 255 front would likely fit ok, but ideally you'd want to go to 275 rear for balance, which is starting to be a lot of changes and you'd have to let your insurance company know. Ideally, I'd hold out and find the 245 front.

Thanks for swift response! Fronts are proving an issue with OS4S’s for some reason. May stick with PSS after all as no size issues. Other than an annual run to the ‘Ring & Spa - which may be cancelled this year anyway - the car won’t see a track and given I swap to winters in Oct/Nov for 5/6 months the loss of the PS4S’s apparent superior wet grip won’t be a huge loss.

Seen it thanks. Will stick with PSS. Have been happy with them to date. And spend enough time agonising over tyre choice on my more focused track cars! - this isn’t my only car and and spends 98% of it’s time being driven ‘normally’ on road.

Would it be okay to run PSS on the front and PS4 on the rears? for the below setup

Or should I stick to PSS all around?

    225/40/18 Front - PSS
    255/35/18 Rear - PS4

If it's relevant, I'm looking at switching from P-Zero on an F-type R, and S4S is looking like the best tyre at the moment. My driving is primarily road, occasional track, and wet handling is important (since I'm in the UK).

I have a Ferrari F12 I purchased recently second hand with Pirelli P Zero tyres all round.

I cant comment on the grip as I haven't taken it to the limit yet but the ride over UK roads is awful - noisy, tramlines badly and jars over every little bump. In short, the NVH is very poor. At high speed I also find the tramlining unnerving as the car pulls left and right.

So I am keen, even though the tyres have lots of tread left, to switch to Michelins.

I read great reviews on the new Michelin Sport 4 S tyre but it's not homologated for the Ferrari F12 and so my local dealer recommends the older Michelin Pilot Super Sport (K2).

Will I get any gain in stability and NVH switching to the MPSS or should I go to a non-Ferrari garage and fit the newer 4S?

I'd love to know your recommendations as the consensus appears away from Pirelli to Michelin but the question is which one?

    #3725
    1. TyreReviews Paul Bart archived

Without doing the test myself it's very difficult to say, but I know a number of Ferrari drivers (not FF) who have switched to the 4S over the SuperSport and had no issues. The 4S brings quite a lot of comfort over the SuperSport, and as this seems to be your priority, I'd suggest pushing your research in this route.

I had my heart set on the Goodyear F1A3 after your review and now i come across this review.
I have a 2012 B8.5 Audi S4 Avant in South Africa, and do mostly highway cruising and spirited backroad driving. 2 Fronts Tyres are Michelin PS3 255/35/R19 96Y XL +- 5mm tread left. Rears are Goodyear F1A2 less than 2mm tread left. Do I replace the Goodyears with F1A3 or with Michelin PS4S? I will replace the fronts with the same spec when its dead. Consider here in SA the PS4S is nearly double the price of the F1A3.

Hmm. Ideally I'd say new PS4S on the rear, move rear PSS to front so they wear quicker. This is the ideal situation, but it's worth noting that the relative difference in carcass stiffness could upset the balance of the car. I'd try the above, and if it feels weird move the PS4S to the front.

The ideal scenario would be two sets of wheels, with a set of Cup 2's on for the track and the PS4S for the road.

If it has to be one set of tyres, go with the PS4S as the Cup 2's are too much of a compromise for daily work year round on an M3.

    Hi,

Great review/comparison and you have me sold on PS4S.

Got few questions if you could help.

I have recently bought a BMW F10 M5 and it came fitted with the following:
    265/40 R19 98V contiwinter contact (Front)
    285/35 ZR19 99Y Bridgestone potenza (Rear)

The issues I see are two folds, first, the rear tyre is of incorrect width, need 295 to fix that. The car lacks grip at start, hopefully this will fix it to some extent.

The other issue is mixing of winter tyres in the front and all weather at the rear. How big an issue this is? I am going to be driving in south east England most of the time so don’t think I really need winter tyres except in most cases.

So if I swap my rear tyres with the correct size of PS 4S and leave winter Conti’s in the front for now, how detrimental it is going to be in terms of overall performance. If I can carry on then I plan to change my front tyres mid year.

Else, I will bite the bullet now and swap all 4s at once. Any guidance will be highly appreciated. Thanks

I wouldn't recommend mixing winter and summer on any car, let alone an M5! With the PS4S at the rear and Contis at the front you'll have a very strangely balanced car, with a lot of push understeer, and in the dry relatively weak braking. As the Continental winter tyres wear they will start to behave more like a summer tyre, but I'd be so much happier running all 4 corners of the car the same.

      PS Nice car :)

Thanks. Appreciate the quick response. I value your opinion and will go for PS4S on all 4 corners.

PS: it is an amazing car indeed. I had an e90 325i prior to this and I thought that was a powerful car before I drove this one ;). Still getting the hang of unbelievable acceleration before doing anything silly.

Sorry, it’s me again. I was placing an order when the tyre dealer told me that PS4S are Mercedes tyres and I should go for PSS. It didn’t make sense because I read your launch impressions where Michelin had these tyres on an M4.

I called up Michelin helpline and they told me that these tyres are designed for Mercedes and perform best on a Mercedes although it can be used on a BMW and even he tried to nudge me towards PSS. It’s strange why would Michelin give reporters these tyres to try out on a car where they are not going to perform at their best.

Now I am concerned that although PS4S can be used on my M5 but if something were to happen to the car would my insurance company try to use this as an excuse? Luckily, I have never had any insurance claim ever but I know these companies willl try to use any excuse not to pay.

Do you know why this might be that these tyres are not marked suitable for BMW like PSS if they are the next gen of the same tyres? Licensing issue?

Although I want to go for the best but in this case I am being tempted to go for PSS and hope that by the time it comes to next set of tyres this has been resolved.

            1. TyreReviews MQ archived

Do the M4 and M5 run the same tyre sizes? I thought they were different!

As we're never told exactly what changes are made for each brand approval it would be difficult to say with total accuracy, but given how much the PS4S moved the game on in comfort and wet grip over the PSS, it would be my guess that an MO marked PS4S would still be a better tyre than an aftermarket PSS on the new M5.

The choice is up to you, but there are no legal or insurance issues, and as you're changing all 4 tyres, you don't need to worry about a balance issue either.

Hi, I wanted to give you a quick update on my experience on running my M5 F10 on the 4s.

I was sold after watching this comparison but was confused by Michelin sales rep who advised me against this tyre since it is marked for Mercedes. In the end I took your advise and bought these for all 4 corners last week. It has been just about 300 miles of which first 100-150 was more easy break in drive. But what a revelation this tyre has been in the little time I have spent with these (including some spirited driving over the sunny long weekend).

My tyre spin is down by 60-70%, and I struggle to lose the tail at lower speed which I could do very easily on my earlier Bridgestones. This is probably the grippiest tyres I have had in the dry and hate to say but waiting for some rain now to experience wet handling. Thanks to your comprehensive review/comparison I made the right decision and now look forward to fun I am going to have riding these 550 horses (with respect ;) ). Cheers!

Thanks for the update :) While they've got probably the best wet handling in class, you still have a lot of power so don't expect miracles. They will be many times better than the Bridgestone though.

As the winter is approaching the Swedish west coast it's time to swap for winter tires. Perfect time to plan my new summertires.

I am currently running PSS 245/35-19 front and 275/30-19 rear on my BMW 530D and they need replacement.

What would be a better choice, PS4 or PS4S?

I don't do trackdays but I need the tire to perform in both dry and wet with focus more for wet since I live in Sweden and my wide tires don't like rain right now in combination with 600Nm of torque on the rears.

    What am I looking for?
A tire that performs on the road dry and wet and a tire that is comfortable and quiet. Rim guard is a must also.

Since I have a real nice fitment and stance with the given sizes I would like to but the same sizes if possible. My rims are 8,5 front and 9,5 rear with 245/35-19 front and 275/30-19 rear.

I have a W205 c63 and my OEM tire sizes are 245/35/19 for the front and 265/35/19 for the back. I was wondering if I could switch the back tires to pss 295/30/19 and leave the fronts the same size for grip... or will that affect the drive... the reason I would drop to 30 is so the tire can fit. Do I have to go up a few sizes for the front tire as well ?

    #2947
    1. TyreReviews Peter Andrino archived

The balance of the car will change, but more importantly when moving from a 265 to a 295 you risk the wheel not being wide enough to fit the tyre properly, plus the tyre might have body work clearance issues!

      1. Peter andrino TyreReviews archived

I can't really advise properly without driving the car, but I personally wouldn't consider jumping much about a 255/35 front.

          265/35 R19 needs a 9-10.5 inch wheel with 9.50 ideal.
          295/30 R19 needs a 10-11 inch wheel with 10.5 being perfect.

The main purpose will be mountain driving with lots of curves as well as ups and downs from about 9,000´ to 12,500´ and down again.

As long as you're not expecting the tyres to work in snow and ice, they'll be great. We've used the PS4S in minus conditions (c) and as long as you let them warm up a little there's plenty of grip.

They will be bad on snow and ice, so you'll need a winter tyre if you want to be mobile in those conditions!

You have partly answer my question on the comfort, noise and wet grip improvement of PS4. But can you give me your thinking of them in dry handling and braking and tread wear also.

No one has tested the PS4 and PSS back to back, so any answer would just be an educated guess. My educated guess would be PS4 would have similar dry handling and braking performance, better tread wear, but will feel softer in dry handling when compared to the PSS as it's not as performance orientated.

Michelin said (prior to the PS4S being released) to use the MPSS in favour of the PS4 in extreme conditions such as track use.

The CUP2 have a very short mileage (15.000km), the PSS over 30.000 and my conclusion is that the CUP2 are the right one for the Megane, but that means a greater expense of money.

If you prefer the Cup 2 over the PSS, you'll probably still prefer the Cup 2. The PS4S offers similar dry grip to the PSS, much improved wet grip, but it still has comfort and noise in mind which detracts from the steering feel. As the Cup 2 is designed just for driving pleasure, it "feels" much better, even if the ultimate dry grip isn't that much higher.

If you need more dry grip, you need to be looking at the Pilot Sport Cup 2 for both cars.

Neither the PS4S or PSS move the raw dry grip on a huge amount when compared to the PSS, and the sidewalls are both softer (highlighted in the video), which leads me to believe you'd definitely be better off with a dedicated track tyre.

I'm currently with 235/35 295/30 19 PSS on my 2009 Porsche Carrera 997 and I’m not satisfied with them because of handling balance especially for the front. It causes heavy push-under when accelerated at tight corner on a track as well as street.

Hi, Have just watched your review between the Michelin super sport & 4s. I have the Super sport on my C63 which are fantastic in the dry and OK in the wet, unless you put your foot down then there is no grip and the back end is out to the side. Would you say that the 4s would overcome this or would you recommend a different tyre for the winter?

    #2518
    1. TyreReviews Cliff archived

The 4S is likely the best performing UHP summer tyre and will be a significant improvement over the Pilot Super Sport. That said, the C63 has a lot of power and torque, so we're not sure you'll be able to apply full throttle in the cold and wet with ANY tyre in the lower gears.

For ultimate safety a winter tyre would be recommended for the coldest months.

That largely depends on where in the country you live, what time you drive, and whether you can leave the car at home when it's snowing or icy.

Personally I'd put the 4S on when the PSS are due for replacement, then if you find you're having issues in the winter or need to stay mobile whatever the conditions, look at a full winter option.

10mm rear, nothing front. They're after market wheels with non-oe widths and offsets so spacers really depend on what wheels you're running.

The Pirelli P Zero Nero isn't the same category as these tyres, the closest Pirelli would be the PZ4 P Zero.

If there's no track work with no hard cornering, the PS4 might be a good option as you'll appreciate the improved comfort, lower noise and better wet grip when compared to the PSS you're replacing.

For noise and comfort, how do PS4 compare with PZ4? I'm running 245/40 18".

Lap time delta on track would be a good test.

There's no way we'd do a test like that on the road! Wet and dry lap times is essential.

Who said anything about on the road. I said lap time delta "on track" who goes about setting lap times on the public roads? That's just stupid. Without something like track data there is little point in the comparison just based on the road as MPC2 is designed for use on track.

Yes read it again, and again I can't see why you responded with "There's no way we'd do a test like that on the road!" because I never said to do that nor did I insinuate you would do such a test on the road.

Ah, just some confusion as this page relating to a road-only test of a tyre, and you asking for track times. If / when the PSC2 is tested, there will be plenty of track work, and lots of timing.

Is planned by Michelin to do the MS4S also on 18" sizes?

I'm currently with 225/40 18 PSS on my Mazda3 and I'm looking for a replacement but less noisy and fuel consumption friendly, the MS4S seems to the best option for that but maintaining or improving in almost all areas the performances of PSS.

I'm thinking to go with standard MS4 but I'm concerned about the fact they are far behind in terms of pure sporty driving.
Is there some other alternatives or is better to go again with PSS in 225/40 18?

Michelin are currently saying there are no plans for 18" MPS4S, and they certainly won't appear in 2017 but that doesn't mean they won't ever be made.

For now the 18" PSS sizes will continue where there's OE. The MPS4 would certainly give you an improvement of ride comfort and economy, and would be our choice of 18" tyre if you want to try something other than the PSS. The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 is also worth looking at.

Great comparison, really thorough! We definitely need that PS4S vs PSC2 test, and maybe a little more information about the differences between the PS4, the SportContact 6 and the Asymmetric 3.

Thank you :) We're working on the PS4S Vs PSCup2 video!

You're unlikely to see a PS4 vs SC6 as like with the PS4S there's very few, if any, cross over sizes to test.

The PS4 has been tested against the SC5 and F1A3 by auto express in 2016 which you can find on this site in the test section :)

I will look for that test, thanks. Have you ever done a
comparison between track tyres? The PSC2 are probably the most well
known but they don't seem to be the most critically acclaimed (the Toyo
        R888R come to mind)...
