Auto Bild is not affiliated with, and does not endorse, Tyre Reviews. This is independent editorial coverage of their published test.
For the first time in 2020, Tyre Reviews will be performing its own all season tyre test, but until then, the Auto Bild all season tyre test is the best you can get! Testing ten sets of all season tyres in 225/45 R17 using a BMW 1 Series, and including a summer and winter tyre as reference, Auto Bild have done as thorough a job as ever for their 2019 all season tyre test.
The most notable performances follow the trends other tests have shown during 2019. The new Bridgestone WeatherControl A005 couldn't deliver on the foundations laid by the strong wet and dry braking performance in the shootout test, finishing ninth overall due to a very average snow performance, but more importantly for UK drivers, very high wear.
The Vredestein Quatrac Pro again impressed, beating the established excellent all season tyres from Goodyear and Continental to second place, with a sporty handling feel in all conditions, coupled with good dry and wet grip.
It's no surprise that the Michelin CrossClimate+ won another test, but it was a surprise the "summer optimised" all season tyre from the French manufacturer was second in snow handling. Apparently, it is now a tyre that can do everything.
As this is a German tyre test, they put more weighting on snow performance than we perhaps would in the UK, however the top four places are all excellent all season tyres, with the Goodyear the best if you expect to experience a lot of snow and ice, and the other three patterns having slightly different blends of dry, wet and snow performances.
As always, check out all the glorious data below to decide which tyre is the best for your own personal driving circumstances.
Dry
Due to very strong performances by the new comers from Maxxis and Bridgestone, the usual dry weather braking king, the Michelin CrossClimate+ had to settle for third overall. As usual, all ten all season tyres struggled to match the reference summer tyre, with the Goodyear Vector 4Season Gen-2 the worst of the all seasons, tying with the reference winter tyre.

Michelin asserted it's dry dominance during dry handling, with the Vredestein Quatrac Pro the best of the rest. Both tyres were reported to have a sporty handling feel when compared to other all season tyres on test.

Wet
The wet braking test showed the summer tyre having an even bigger advantage. The Bridgestone A005 continued its run of excellent wet braking results to stop the car ahead of all the other all season tyres, and the new Vredestein Quatrac Pro again impressed.

Dry braking and aquaplaning are often opposing qualities, so it was surprising Maxxis also won the aquaplaning testing! Vredestein, Michelin and Continental were the worst in testing, which highlights the deemphasis of aquaplaning results in new premium designs.

Value
It's no surprise Michelin won the wear testing, the French manufacturer consistently has the best wearing tyres in the market. Continental again prove they've fixed their wear issues with the latest generation of products, wearing nearly as well as the Michelin, and proving better value overall thanks to a lower purchase price.

Good aquaplaning resistance, short braking distances in the snow and on dry roads, low price.
Poor cornering and long braking distances in the wet, slow steering and poor balance in the dry.
Not Recommended.

I had the Michelin crossclimate plus, my first all season. My experience is very disappointing regarding wear. They lasted 3 years and 25.000 km. The noise is high. i think that because the car is not moving very much because of the Covid Pandemic, the tiers changed their form and make a strange noise.
Hi,
I am still looking forward to the promised 2020 test, especially since the vector gen 3 has just been launched.
I was meant to have that test finished by now, sadly covid has delayed things so it looks like Autumn now :(
Best all season tyre for me is by far Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3 Plus! You can buy them on ebay from USA ;)
There are great tyres, but very different to the European all season tyres in this test!
You can't go in snow with that tyre.
haha and end up paying double? Not a good deal at all :(
To all who are looking at the CrossClimate+ :
I had this tyre in this size on our Audi A3
It is a really good tyre but more summer focussed then Winter.
Negative: very loud (even wenn New)
I would recomend Vredestein Quatrac 5 or (if not in your size) Quatrac Pro.
This tyre is way more balanced and the most important: very very quite!
Best regards,
Morris
INTERESTING....thinking about rims change, therefore tires as well......thanks for tip...
i have 195/65/15 cc+ i think they can be loud sometimes.
snow - satisfied, but in summer best. h/w rain -ok.
after 2 years rubber a bit harder in cold...therefore i am juggling with pressures to balance the gelatine effect vs ride stiffnes. :-/ https://media3.giphy.com/me...
Since you are about to perform an all season tyre test, I would like to share a thought of mine. How do all season and summer tyres from the same manufacturer, compare with each other; For example, Quatrac 5 vs Sportrack 5 or Cinturato allseason vs P1 etc. Thank you for time.
Interesting test - But for me it highlighted just how biased a test can be by the personal priorities / opinions of whoever is executing them:
I recently was looking for a set of tyres for my mother's Ford Fiesta - She doesn't do big distances (the recently-scrapped set of age-expired premium summers it was wearing still had a good 4-5mm of tread), she just wants to be able to stop quickly in the wet or dry - and she wouldn't swap tyres between warm and cold weather (i.e. she won't do separate summer / winter tyres).
I bought her a set of Conti All-Seasons, but if I'd have seen this test I may well have gone for the Bridgestones: Cheaper, better wet and dry braking, better aquaplaning resistance and better fuel consumption. The only reasons this tyre didn't score better here are poor wear (not an issue in an elderly relative's car) and slightly increased noise (also not a problem, as this demographic does not drive all that fast or far at a time and often has lower awareness of such things!).
I think you should have given it a special shout-out recommendation as a good choice for lower annual mileage cars such as my mother's.
