11 of the best tyres for the 2018 summer

1 min read Updated

With summer quickly approaching, and tyre test season in full swing, here are 11 of the best summer tyres for 2018.

The first five tyres are ultra high performance / maximum performance summer tyres, usually found in 18 inches and above and have an emphasis on sporty handling and driving enjoyment along with safety criteria such as wet braking.

The next six tyres are premium touring summer tyres which are more often fitted to less sporty cars in smaller wheel sizes, and instead of having a focus on driving dynamics look more to provide higher comfort levels, lower noise and low fuel use, while retaining all of the key safety performances.

This video does not cover any all season or winter tyres options, so if you feel like you might need a tyre to work year round, including in snow and ice, check out our "best tyre type for winter driving" video first.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to ask below, or on the YouTube page!

    Hi,

I have an E90 330d which needs new tyres on the rear, i'm currently running Michelin Pilot Sport 4's all round, which have been excellent in comparison to the Bridgestone's fitted previously. On looking to replace in a 255/35R18 fitment, it appears Michelin no longer make the pilot sports in this size. I wonder what you'd recommend? My own thoughts centre around the Goodyear Asymetric 3's or the Falken FK510's.

    hey
do you think the new tire the goodyear asym 3 in size 225 45 18 95y (higher load index) old michelin primacy 3 225 45 18 91 v will be a bigger difference in comfort
know that the goodyear are super, but the goodyear only available in 95y, I doubt it a bit

I wouldn't worry too much about the higher load rating.

The Asymmetric 5 is out next month, so if you can hold out it might be worth doing so...

Sometimes it can have a small effect, sometimes it is no different! It varies from tyre to tyre!

Hi; I have michelin crossclimate plus(245/45/r17) on mercedes E350, I want to change them with a summer tire. I'm not happy with crossclimate's; they feel not connected to the road. I want to change to PS 4 but this time I doubt about comfort and noise then start to think about primacy 4. I'm so confused. Thanks for your help.

I've not done the test, but there might not be a HUGE amount between the two. The other option is the Continental PremiumContact 6 :)

Things to note, in Malaysia the roads are great on highways but some country/town roads have potholes and are uneven. I mostly use the highway though. I would like a balance for spirited driving and comfort.

Both the Primacy 4 and PIlot Sport 4 are excellent tyres, if you want slightly more sporty driving go for the PS4, and if you want slightly lower noise and comfort, go for the PRimacy :)

Goodyear was a dissapointment for me the last years, i had assymetric 2 for two times 30K x 2, the first ones replaces in warranty after 5000K for inner cracks.

After these, assymetric 3 again for two times, the first ones for 20K and replaced, (no problem really except soft sidewalls), the second ones after 1 year i was about every 2 months at the tyre store for calibration as they get vibrations to the wheel. They needed 5 or 6 pieces of grams to the rim to get it right, I got tired of these shit and the next will be michelin or pirellis.

Surprisingly, with my winter tyres all these years at the same rims Pirelli Sottozero 3 and Continental TS860 i had never ever these problems.

Goodyear, in about a month publishes assymetric 5, good luck !

Strange, I'm sure it was a one off design issue as we have hundreds of positive reviews on the Asymmetric 3, and I've used them a lot myself without issue! I'm testing the Asym 5 in March so excited for it.

Awesome video! But too many choices for this noob!

I have a BRZ (215/45/17) and my stock tires are bald. Looking for something that still gives it fun in the corners but doesn't kill the gas mileage/comfort while general riding. Is that too much to ask for? Am I hopeless in my pursuit!?

For now, my first choice, after reading many threads and reviews are definitely Toyo R888R, but I hope that this year there will be some new cool semi slicks, with the softest mixture of rubber (treadwear ~100).

Depends what you want from the tyre. The SuperSport is better in the dry but not as good in the wet, or as comfortable as the other two. Not much between the PS4 and PC6

Most of the tyres cover your size in this video. Sadly a lot of tyres now are getting softer sidewalls, so if you really value sidewall stiffness you'd have to go for an older pattern with less wet grip. Something like the Michelin Pilot Super Sport of the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti R

What would you suggest as the best balance of managing potholed roads and smooth and efficient on the motorways? i.e. I want it all!

    #4223
    1. TyreReviews Martin archived

That depends on how much of a price difference you're seeing, and what you're looking for in the tyre :)

Looking at the test data they seem closely matched, but with the wear unproven on the Falken so far.

Price for PS4 is 123 GBP and 86 GBP for Falken (in Czech Republic) which is significant. I´m looking for very good dry grip, safe and predictable wet grip, stiff sidewalls for good response, loudness is not a thing for me, same with wear - if it can take 20,000 miles, than I´m happy. I can afford PS4, but Falken sounds like very good value for money and I can buy new engine oil for saved money :D

I don t know if the Asy3 will give me the good amount of comfort i am seeking, since it is quite sporty too. A very comfortable tyre should be Rainsport 3 @ 350€, more biased towards comfort and wet grip than dry lateral grip but since i am desperate with S001 "comfortwise" i am considering it too. Premium contact 6 is around 430€...

If you check the user reviews and the tests, both regard the Asym 3 is more comfort than sports now.

wear is massively reliant on driving style and conditions, but it is true that Michelin tyres usually wear better than their rivals, which can easily offset the higher purchase price. The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 is also well regarded in wear testing and cheaper.

Hi, two questions basically. First, any (insider) news about PS4S regarding 18 inches for Europe for next season? They are since this year available in 18 inches size in US.
Second, since I have 18 inches wheels and I'm looking for summer tyre for next year what is the recommendation between Asymmetric 3 and PS4? I had Asymmetric 2 and was very satisfied and would go with PS4S next if they were available.
I am particularly interested in handling, i.e. which one handles better Asymmetric 3 or PS4?

Hi, I have an Abarth 500 with Koni FSD dampers & Eibach springs so is essesse/competizione spec suspension, but it's on the standard 195/45/16 tyre/wheel combination. It is currently running Yokohama S drive (fitted by the previous owner) but wet grip & traction are really not great. Unfortunately, as wheels sizes get larger & larger even on "tiddlers" there's no decent sport orientated, new generation tyres available. My priority is wet weather grip & steering feel with efficiency & INTERNAL noise levels being reasonably important too. It's a second car so no need for winter tyres as they're on my 4x4 Yeti, but the Abarth still does 10k miles a year. My choice would appear to be between Hankook Ventus Prime 3 or Bridgestone T005. Dunlop Bluresponse & Conti SC3 are also on the shortlist as they're available, but are these designs getting a little old now? Which tyre has better subjective feel? Many thanks.

    #3850
    1. TyreReviews Adrian Dickinson archived

Unfortunately I've not yet driven the Hankook or Bridgestone back to back. Both are modern tyres which means thin sidewalls which will hurt subjective feel, in this case it might be better going for an older design tyre and missing out on some wet grip if subjective handling is key.

Hi, i have ford focus mk3 1.5ecoboost and i want to replace oem 205/55/16. I have narrowed it down to either 225/45/17 or 225/40/18. So i need to get a set of wheels as well. My question is, as the budget is tight (lets say fixed, for sake of the argument), would you recommend to spend less on tyres so bigger portion of the budget will be allocated to 18" or spend more on tyres and go for 17". With 17" i can squeeze in stuff like Goodyear Asymmetric 3. With 18" there will be much more compromises.

As i daily drive it, 75% of the time i prefer comfort, 25% performance. I cant tell how big diffrence in comfort there is, between 17 and 18 (coming from 16)....

Another way of looking at it, is it worth to pick smaller side wall (40/18") or go for all-around-good tyre with maybe worse handling (45/17") ?

Hi. I have a 2008 Mk3 MX5, currently running 205/45/17's. A common mod is to move to 215/45/17's for a wider choice. It's used daily for a 12 mile, each way commute and general 'normal' driving. I don't speed and I don't do anything else to excess, hence ultimate mileage is more important than ultimate grip. Car has come with ContiSport Contact5's, which are v expensive to replace, but seem fine. Would you recommend a budget tyre? If not, what would you recommend for my very average driving?

Hi, I'm going to replace the 245/45 R18 tyres for my Citroen C6 2.7HDI. Bridgestone T005 and Michelin Primacy 4 are just launched here in Thailand. I'm also interested in the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 3 which is also found positive in your review, could we generally say that the AS3 be a kind of sport tyre with more comfort? All three are at the similar price range here. Which one is more recommendable?

With respect to the weight load, shall I concern? Per specification, my C6's weight empty is about 1,871 kgs, and the gross vehicle weight is 2,335 kgs, no trailer towing required. All three shortlisted tyres have the same "100" weight load, but T005 and PM4 include also the 'XL' code (i.e. 100W XL), while AS3 does not (i.e. 100Y). Your kind suggestion is much appreciated. I've not tested the two tyres back to back. In theory they should perform at a similar level, but the Asymmetric 3 is certainly the more proven tyre as the T005 hasn't been out for as long.

Regarding XL, as far as I'm aware as long as the load rating is ok, the XL makes little difference.

Hi, I drive a VW Golf mk7 estate and have always had Michelin tyres on it. Like many other owners I suffer from stepping on the inside edge of the rear tyres...VW calls this a characteristic of the car! Some advise 4 wheel alignment but just as many don't and results seem mixed. I believe the issue also spreads to othe VAG cars and some models of the Ford Focus.

My 225/45 91v tyres typically go 20k before the noise induced by this odd wear gets unbearable. It's like a dodgy wheel bearing. Changing the tyres gets rid of the noise. The only issue is there is still life left in them with tread depths between 4-5mm.

My question is am I best going for a long lasting compound that Michelin seem to provide (in the hope the stepping takes longer to manifest) or should I just go for a slightly cheaper, perhaps softer (?) tyre, based on having to replace the Michelins before they wear out? Are you aware of tread patterns that might help? Many owners say Dunlops develop the issue fastest and need changing quickly. Some say older Continue sport patterns help or that asymmetrical are better than directional...

    Any advice welcome.

Try to indicate your way of using the car & yearly number of km. Is your priority sport, comfort, eco driving or ??? For VW Golf 1.6 TDi you should use 15' or 16' wheels, big positive power & fuel economy difference on wheels to any bigger size. All models you mentioned are well, I would add Hankook (Ventus Prime 3 or Eco K 425/435) made in Europe (Hungary). Also Dunlop Bluresponse are usually soft & silent but make usually less total km. You can also try Pirelli P1 (normal or Cinturatto) or Vredestein Sportrac 5 or newest model Falken ZIEX ZE310 EcoRun. Just compare the prices & decide!
P.S. Speed index H should suffice (max. speed 210 km/h) instead of usually more expensive V index.

Based on all your experience, what should I buy? Maybe you could recommend the best runflat tires and the best TL tires.

Thank you very much in advance!

Thank you! The car came with runflat tires but I'm thinking to get regular. I noticed that the runflat versions usually have a B grade for wet grip compared to their "normal" versions.

If you're happy to live without a runflat, there are benefits to moving away from a runflat tyre, but you need to keep in mind whether that trade off is worth the risk of being stranded.

Hi I recently bought an Audi A6 AllRoad running 225/55/17's it's shod with Bridgestone Potenza's on the front and Tirana's on the back which is not great for a Quattro. They haven't got much life in them and I'm researching what to replace them with. The FalkenZIEX ZE310 EcoRun's seem good but I will be doing max 10% of my driving on farm tracks and fields so they may not be the best choice. I do enjoy driving and want a tyre with a stiff side wall, can you make any recommendations?

I'd probably be looking at the Bridgestone Turanza T005, Bridgestone usually build a sturdy tyre and the sidewalls should be a little firmer than the Falkens.

The Kumho HP91 is designed for more offroad use, and around the same price. It won't be as good in the wet as the other tyres mentioned though.

Thanks for your help, it's all about compromise I guess, a directional tyre would likely to be better off road but has a higher rolling resistance and hard to find good ones in budget.

You can even go for CPC6 in the size 205/55 R16, they should be produced as well.
I use on our VW GOLF VI 1.6 TDI Bluemotion (2010) Hankook Eco K425 (now replaced by K435) and Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance, both in size 195/65 R15 (cheaper tire prices). More than 1000 km autonomy is great! Have fun!

I need new tires 225/65/17 for my 2012 Chevy Equinox. I live in Tucson, Arizona where summers are very hot and dry most of the time, but we get very hard monsoon rains in July and August and cold and dry in the winter, with snow every once in a while. I don't put many miles on my car, approximately 6000 per year. The Michelin tires that came with my car still have tread but are cracking because of sun and heat. Price is an issue, but value is important as well. What tire do you recommend for me? Also is there a product I should use on my tires to protect them from the sun?

    Hi Guys,

I have spent about 9 hours on your site researching back and forwards. When I think I have a short list, I'm not then sure when I read something else :)

I think I have a tricky situation. I have a modified VW T6 Transporter 5 seater, running 20x9 rims on -40mm cobra springs. It is the T6 T32 variant on 4Motion, so needs a 103 min load rating.

So, rightly or wrongly, I have kind of being treating it as a 4x4. It's definitely not just a van at 205hp and with the wheel and suspension mods made.

Looking at your definitions, I decided on summer tyres, as that it is by far it's main use in the SE UK and crossing Europe in summer.

I have been trying to decide based on noise, comfort and handling of the tyre. I have obviously modified the van to handle way better on corners and roundabouts and be more stable at speed on motorways. It certainly is that compared to my last van. This van came on Jinyu tyres, hence being nervous and wanting to change.

The van needs to run on 275/40/r20 with this set up. I had narrowed it down to Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (not 4 S) but very pricey and the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti. Am I barking up the right tree?? Anything else to look at think about??

    Any help much appreciated, Cheers

275/40 R20! Wew. The good news is the Falken FK510 is available in your size (not sure re load rating) and a fair chunk cheaper than the Michelin, so that's where I'd be looking.

    Hi,

I have the new (year 2017) Merc. E220d estate (S213) delivered with new Mich. Primacy 4, 245/45-18 XL. I think the tires are a bit noisy on the most common "rough" surface om the road, but on very fine surface of the road they are VERY quiet. It also seems, that the more hot the tires get the more noisier they are. There is more noise from the tires at 22 degrees C. compared to eg. 10 degrees C. I have never noticed that from my tires.

Maybe the tire is more sensitive to the rough surface, compared to what I know from ex. Mich. Primacy HP ZP, Goodyear Eagle Assym3.

The grip and comfort and so on for the Primacy 4 is okay for me. I know the Conti Sport Contact 6 from other cars and don't like this tire from the noiselevel it have, but I know the new Conti Prem.Contact 6. I drive about 50.000 km/year and know "a good tires makes a good car".

Based on that, which tire will you recommend for this car? Thanks in advance.

    #3542
    1. TyreReviews Dirla archived

If the car is new to you and the Prim 4's are the only tyre you've tried on it, have you considered it might just be a noisy car? Michelin improved the noise levels over the Primacy 3, which was better than the Prim HP, especially in runflat!

      #3543
      1. Dirla TyreReviews archived

        Hi,
Yes, I have considered that. I’m comming from BMW 520d (F11) wich of corse is a total different car. When you say the Prim 4 noiselevel is below the Prim HP ZP (runflat) which I know from my BMW, then I think the E220 maybe more noisy. But the E220 have less noise from engine and wind, maybe I hear the tires more then. If I should change to another tires because of the noise and still have a good tire (grip, comfort and so on), which tire could be an option? In my opinion noise is not just noise. Maybe a tire with higher noiselevel marked on the tire, gives less noise INSIDE the car? Thanks in advance.

        1. TyreReviews Dirla archived

A number of manufacturers are making tyres with acoustic foam options, which is essentially sound deadening foam bonded to the inside of the tyre. I would suggest looking at this option as noise is so important to you.

          #3545
          1. Dirla TyreReviews archived

Which manufactures do you think make these acoustic option? What is your opinion about Conti Prem. Contact 6 compared to Michelin Primacy 4?

            #3547
            1. TyreReviews Dirla archived

Both good tyres. Continental are leading the way with the acoustic foam, I believe they call it "contisilent" so its worth checking to see if the PC6 has it as an option in your size.

                Hi, thanks for info.
BTW I read a review about MPrim4 and he had the same experience as me about the weak metallic sound and He had the same experiences about the weak slippery sound I have when driving on a nice (fine) roadsurface. It sounds about the tire “hanging in” the roadsurface (which, of course, it does not). I think it's a strange tire.

What is your opinion on my future experience if I drive on the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 3 (245/45-18) on my Merc. E220d, compared to my Michelin Primacy 4 (245/45-18, 100W XL)?
I like the comfort drive from my Prim4. (but not the noise as you know). Is Asym3 too "hard" (stiff)?
I only know Asym3 from my former car (BMW 520d F11) but it was runflat. Of course it was very hard and stiff to drive on.

I've not tested the Prim 4 extensively, but I do not think you'll find the A3 "too hard", it's a very well balanced tyre and I'm confident you'll enjoy it!

I do not understand this at all. Now I have purchased four Goodyear Eagle Asym3 in the same size as my Primacy 4 (245 / 45-18 100Y) and the Asym3 really run badly for noise. They drive really well in terms of road grips, but there is a very penetrating "resounding sound" that gets worse in rough asphalt. Really annoying resounding sound. Should new tires be driven for some km before they are okay? I've talked to Goodyear who say they do not have to.

                        #3596
                        1. TyreReviews Dirla archived

Generally no, tyres don't get quieter as they bed in. Tests have shown time and time again the Asymmetric 3 to be a low noise tyre, so it is either due to a rare combination between your wheel and car combination, or something like over inflation (have you checked the pressures?)

One thing worth noting is that a large % of tyre noise is generated by air movement, which is governed by tread depth, so new tyres will always be louder than more worn tyres.

                            Thanks for your answer.

Yes, I have a lot of focus on tire pressure. I usually use a pressure that is in the middle of the minimum and the maximum for the car and tire size and measures only on cold tires, with my own tire pressure gauge etc. There is no difference in the resounding sound if the tires are cold and hot. It is the road surface and the speed that determines it.

The resounding sound may sound like driving with very high tire pressure. It sounds a bit like turning on a car tire, bicycle tire, etc. that gives a resounding sound.

The tires have been delivered and installed by my local MB dealer, and I have now been with them to hear what we do. They can hear the sound, but are unsure if the tires fail. We have therefore ordered a Goodyear representative to come and test the tires on my car.

Something else is that now I have driven approx. 450 km since yesterday when got the tires, and the overall noise level from the road itself seems better (the resounding sound is unchanged) and regardless of whether the tires are to be driven because they are new or it is psychological, well … that's okay :-)

I have kept my Prim 4, do not know if I change back to them or sell them. The driving characteristics of the car are much better with Asym3.

                            EDIT:
I see the production date on the Asym3 is 42/16. It's an old tire ?!?

Thanks for the update, let me know what Goodyear say. 4216 is a little older than I would expect to be sold, there's likely to have been a pattern update in that time, but only Goodyear will be able to tell you for sure.

Goodyear says that the Assym3 should be markt with "MOE" which I don't see on the tire. They even says there is a difference with and without this mark ... (therefore I before always bought tires with the * (star) when I had my BMW's - just in case). They visit MB in af few days, to see and try my tire.

                                Question:
Why is Assym3 placed in the category: Max Performance Summer, and the Conti Premium Contact 6 in: Premium Touring Summer, when they both are in the same target group? Maybe Mercedes-Benz are right after all, when they say the Premium Contact 6 is a better choice for E220d. They told me the Assym3 were more "hard/stiff" when they mounted it on the aluwheel compared to PC6. I did not know that.

Is Conti PC6 much more soft compared to Asym3 and not so sporty driving like Asym3?

Dunlop is the only tire Goodyear have with the MOE-mark.

    Hei!

    Greetings from Estonia!
I'm looking for a new set of tyres for my third generation Volvo V70 T6 AWD. I'm looking at sizes 245/40R18 (original size) or 245/45R18 (I think the latter one might look visually better under the car and as far as I know, there should not be any fitment issues. Speed reading might be off a little.).
I'm looking more at premium class tyres. As the climate has been lately changing a lot, our summers can go either way, be hot and dry or wet and cold, then I'm looking at tyres that perform well in both conditions. I'm also interested in decent mileage.
I'm leaning towards Premium Contact 6 (price and performance wise seems like a good set to go with), but I have also been thinking about something similar from Michelin, also Goodyear's F1 Asymmetric 3 looks good. But I'm open to all suggestions.

Hi! To be honest, all the tyres you mention will be great tyres, so it might come down to local availablity and pricing! One thing worth noting, in the UK at least changing your tyre size is regarded as a modification which you need to let your insurance company know about.

But about insurance, our rules about tyres are quite easy going. No need to let anybody know, what size tyres you are running as long as they are safe and right for the running season.

    Hey!

I live in Switzerland and need summer tyres for both my cars, and don't be fooled by the country - the summer easily gets mid to high 30s temperatures!

1 car is doing 180km (~112miles) a day round trip to work 5 days a week, motorway most of the way, Audi A5 2.0tdi 255/35/19

The second car is doing 140km (~87miles) a day round trip to work 5 days a week, motorway most of the way, Mustang 5.0 255/40/19

In July we are driving to Greece for 2 weeks in the A5, so the tyres need to do well in long distance/extreme heat!

At the moment we have Nexen winter tyres on both cars but we are thinking about the Bridgestone Turanza T005 for the summer for both cars, as on a website supplying tyres here they are rated B economy and A for rain. What do you think?

    Thanks!

    1. TyreReviews Gemma archived

The T005 is a solid shout for the Audi, I'd also look at the PS4 or Primacy 4 as they both wear very well.

For the Mustang I'd probably want something a bit more sporty than the T005, so something like the PS4S or the CSC6 would be where I'd be looking (though the CSC6 can wear quite quickly)

Why do you think the T005 wouldn't be suitable for the Mustang?

It wouldn't be dangerous or bad, but the Mustang is a sports car and the T005 is a touring tyre balanced more towards comfort than sporty handling.

Ah, ok, I think maybe because of the distance every day, economy on fuel is a big thing to look for (since the car itself isn't so economic on fuel lol)
I had a quick look for the PS4S and they are about 340francs each here (on a cheap website!), and say E for fuel economy :( as long as the T005 are a good tyre quality wise, then it's fine!
(this country is extremely strict on speed limits etc, it's hard to have fun here....but we drove to Vienna in Mustang last weekend, and home yesterday and doing 170+ continously on autobahn... the winter tyres were not happy! lol)

Its time to buy new summer tires for my abarth 595 competizione (205 40 r17). Because of that low profile I am a bit scared for cracking my wheels. So I guess I am looking for a tyre with good rim protection. Also I would like my tire to have great dry performance and to be able to withstand lots of miles.

    Contenders are:

    1. Michelin Pilot sport 3 ( I read lots of reviews suggesting poor mileage, but great performance)

Thank you for your advice. One more thing: Asy 3 vs Asy 2, people are saying that asy 2 have much better rim protection than asy 3 (almost non existing rim protection). Should I be worried about that? Is that true in your case?

        #3514
        1. TyreReviews Mihailo archived

Sadly it depends on tyre size as they both have sizes with and without a rim flange.

I don't have the specifics to hand, so if a owners forum is saying that I would be inclined to believe them.

Not that rim protection offers much protection outside of VERY low speed curb brushes, it won't make any difference to the risk of an alloy cracking in a pothole.

One more question and no more:) I found that Continental Premium Contact 6 has better rolling friction than Goodyear Asy 3 (on some reviews here or auto express or someplace else). They are using new compound in PC6 that can last 20% more than sport contact 5. Anyway if that is true they will be neck to neck with asy 3 I guess or maybe better in terms of life span. So which one has better dry *grip* performance?:) Thank you :)

Hi do you maybe mean Premium Contact 5 as I have understand that Goodyear did improve wear on Premium Contact 6 ?

The wear was improved by 15% over the Premium Contact 5. There were similar claims when moving between the Sport Contact 5 and 6, but the 6 still wore more quickly than rival tyres, which is why I've said "might wear quickly" for the PC6.

    What's a good quiet tyre in 235/45 R18?

Recently fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 3, which, to my surprise, are comparable to my Conti IceContact winters in terms of noise.

    So far I've looked at:

    Fulda Sportcontrol 2
    Sava Intensa UHP2

Both rated at 68dB and tested favorably for low noise in various reviews. Hankook Ventus Prime 2 K115 also looks like an option with 67dB, although it's an older model.

Saw the recent Ace summer tyre test and I guess Falken FK510 could also be an option, even though I'd probably prefer something a little more comfort oriented.

I’m currently using the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 and before that I used the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, but would like to try some Michelin tyres. It seems from the tyre purchase sites that I can fit either the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. I’ve seen your reviews comparing the SS and the Sport 4S, but not a comparison between the SS and Sport 4. I should be shooting a PS4 vs PS4S video soon, though I imagine the differences will be fairly small so the PSS vs PS4S video should mostly apply. In short, the PS4 will have much better wet grip than the PSS, but the PSS will feel slightly more sporty.

The sidewalls on the Goodyear and Michelin are also probably equal in strength. You can be unlucky and get a puncture in any tyre, the only puncture I've had was in a Cup 2 which have harder sidewalls!

235/50 is quite a bit taller and will make your speedo under read, if you want to go wider, 225/45 or 235/40 would maintain your speed readings.

Probably all the 11 mentioned are really good tyres. but for which car and in what weather and climate conditions? unfortunately I am a Greek owner of 4 hankook's k125 205/50 17 on a C4 coupe.I'm totally unsatisfied with my choice, taken by looking some of the latest test results. fair tyre but the only thing responds to the tests results is good wear. Wet handling /dry braking truly average, comfort and noise are just acceptable for a touring tyre. Have you any suggestions for replacing them with a better set?
Generally, I have aggressive driving style and so far (before hankook's)I have used the following types of tires:
    1. Michelin energy /saver : Good overall tyre, high wear but not inspiring sporty driving. very sensitive sidewall drains very quickly in the hot Greek summer.
    2. Uniroyal rallye 550: excellent wet performance, very comfortable, good in the dry, but a little bit soft sidewalls and low wear.
    3. Falken Ziex 512: good in the dry, strong sidewalls, poor wear.
    4. Michelin PS2: amazing dry performance, good in wet, highest wear, very expensive.
    5. Matador MP46 hectorra2: sporty, comfortable, with fair performance but it became dangerous after the middle age .
    6. Goodyear efficient grip performance: A real good tyre with a lot of wet and dry grip. quiet and comfy, but not such excellent as awarded in most of tests

I have similar experience with ventus 3 k125, only that I'm not driving very aggressive so I find the handling fine/great but braking not so good (compared with Continental premium contact 1, and that's 15+ years old model). Maybe Hankook made the tyres good for temperatures when the tyre tests are done-around 10-20 Celsius. But as I live just north of Greece and the temperatures are 40 in summer, they are not great at breaking.
Aggelis, you haven't tried Continental yet, maybe you should give a chance to Premium contact 6 next.

Very nice overview! Shame not all new tires are available in all sizes.
Unfortunately all those reviews are very subjective. For example, T005 has horrible performance according to peoples reviews on this website, but all of them used tires during this winter (WHAT?!). Some people even running tyres on only one axle (WHAT?!) and leaving reviews. Would be nice to have ability to leave a comments here as some reviews are just ridiculously incompetent.

Would be nice to see tests with 50% wear, a real world test one day. Nobody run on new tyres all the time.

Also it would be nice to hear a treadwear. I know not all tires will have it mentioned here in UK, but a lot of tyres sold here are also sold in US and have TW markings. Although treadwear is relative measurement, experience shows that it is quite good indicator of wear. General rule - treadwear number/4 = thousands of km will last by average driving. Some tyre treadwear can be found here: https://www.safercar.gov/Ve...

Some of the reviews for the T005 on this site need to be deleted - they were placed before the tyre was available to public so they must have meant the T001. I'll get this updated tonight. I agree regarding wear testing, it's just very difficult and expensive!

I'm looking for a set of tyres for my new wheels, and I am looking for 235/35/19. Now, I would have just bought PS4's had they been available in this size, due to the longevity of the tyres, but I think the PS4S are going to be too much tyre (price wise, as well as performance) for the lazy car these wheels will be going on (An Audi A4 3.0 Quattro with an auto box).

So now I am a little stuck. While performance is a large consideration, so is longevity, or more importantly, the price per mile ratio. So whilst I might have been able to justify the PS4's, I think the PS4S's would be a step too far for me in this size.

I have had good results with Vredstein (Sessanta's) in the past. They lasted quite well, so I was thinking of trying the Vorti's. Looking at reviews on here, some people are suggesting getting up to, and sometimes over, 30k on a set of these. And at £105 a corner, they seem pretty reasonable.

In your video, you are suggesting the FK510. Whilst a touch more expensive, I was wondering if you had, or knew where there was, any more data on longevity of these tyres? Or any other tyres? Most tests don't seem to give any regard for this aspect of a tyres performance. I have used Falkens in the past (years ago), but was never too impressed by their wear rates, so was wondering if these new ones are likely to fare any better?

Also, surprisingly, Kwik-Fit here in the UK, at the moment, currently have £80 back via a vouncher on a set of 4 Goodyears (Eagle F1 ASY3). This makes them only marginally more expensive than the Vorti's, after delivery and fitting is considered. I have ran these before, but the car was sold before being able to fully appreciate their longevity characteristics. However, user reviews on here suggest they wont be as good as the Vorti's when it comes to longevity.

Basically, I am looking for a good performing tyre, with a good, hard wearing nature. And while the PS4S may well still be the best choice here, I would like something a bit more on the affordable end of the spectrum due to my car not actually being a particularly fast car, so longevity is slightly more important than outright performance, for me. What would you suggest?

    #3364
    1. TyreReviews xs2man archived

Remember, the PS4S will last longer than the competition making the pence per mile similar to cheaper tyres.

The FK510 is a bit of an unknown in wear at the moment. The Asymmetric 3 tests will in wear so they look like an excellent bargain with the voucher you mention. I'd take them over the Vorti unless you prioritise dry handling above everything else.

Great. Thanks for the quick reply.

I had PS4's on my Golf ED30, and they were excellent. Really enjoyed them. I also have them sitting on a set of wheels I also have (but they are really a Golf sized set-up, rather than an A4 sized setup), so would have preferred to go this route. I could put on the bigger 255/35/19 tyre on the wheels, and run 5mm spacers up front for this car, and that would let me put PS4's back on, albeit at the same price as the PS4S's at the smaller size. But I'd have the advantage of a better load rating, which would be fine for this car, but potentially required for the potential next car (both the current car, and potential future car will be lazy cruisers rather than sporty cars, so outright grip levels aren't as much a priority as wear rates, and obviously braking characteristics).

So no, I don't prioritise dry grip above all else, so it's good to hear your thoughts on these tyres (the Vorti's) when compared to the AS3's. But I do prioritise wear rates, as I generally do around 25k+ per year between my cars, and it gets old, fast, changing tyres every few months.

I may well go for the AS3's this time round then. Hopefully, as they wear down, I will be replacing them in pairs, and then the extra cost of the PS4S would be as hard a pill to swallow in pairs rather than the full set.

Really good video. I'm currently looking for new rear tyres for my M3 E46 which doesn't do any track days but does end up on the motorway doing long distances from time to time. I have Falken 453's all around and have been generally happy with them, perhaps wear is a little quick. Do you know how to FK510 would compare to the 453?

I've not tested them back to back yet, but I know the FK510 is a significant upgrade over the FK453 so the new tyre will be a good step forward for you!

Thanks for your feedback Jonathan, definitely very helpful.

I'm currently driving a Mondeo MK4 (2.0 tdci) with Nokian zLine 235/45/17 (215/50 is an option too) which have slight cracks everywhere on the second year so I'm looking for replacement.

I'm trying to decide between the Falken FK510 and the Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 (possibly the ventus prime 3 as well). Both me and my wife aren't sporty drivers (we have a little kid too) but I would sacrifice comfort and fuel consumption for safety (shorter breaking distance, emergency steering etc). Availability and the pricing of the FK510 is great here but I would pay more for the S1 evo2 (or anything in the similar pricing range) if it is a better tyre.

Without having done the direct comparison it's very hard to say for sure, but looking at all the test data available the two tyres you're looking at are VERY similar. Neither would be a bad choice. I'd be tempted to go with the Falken just because it's the slightly newer tyre :)

Huge thanks for the quick reply! How much of a sacrifice is picking the
touring route (hankook ventus prime 3 as the reviews are great there) vs
the UHP in terms of safety. I guess the steering won't be that precise
but what about breaking in wet/dry, aquaplaning, chance of blown tyre,
        etc

In the same sizes, wet and dry braking will be VERY similar between the two type of tyre, ie PS4 and Primacy 4 in the same size will have very similar wet and dry braking.

Hello, between Hankook Ventus Prime 3 K125 and Michelin Primacy 3 (205/55 / r16) what do you recommend? I've seen the tests and are undecided. Thank you

It would depend on the price difference, they're both excellent tyres.

The price difference is about 15 euro (Michelin) for all tires (4).

Id be tempted to go with the falken too as theyre generally pretty consistent. From my own research, hankook seem to be hit or miss with wet performance, both users and tests reporting either excellent wet behaviour, or poor wet behaviour, with seemingly no middle ground or reason. This is what has put me off so far. It could simply be two production facilities, one gets it right, one consistently screws up the compound....

Totally agree, there seems to be a non trivial difference between where a tyre is produced, also between sizes, load indexes and even XL and non XL. The Nokian zLine has good reviews but the ones I got aren't in good shape. The compound is hard and have missing peaces, the wear is great (about 6mm left after 30 000km) but there are cracks when it isn't that sunny here.
