Welcome to tyre reviews total tyre guide. This guide is a collection of articles explaining everything about tyres, from how they are made, the meaning of all the side wall markings, right to the differences between summer and winter tyres and the best way to purchase them online!
Hi I have a Honda civic 1.8 v-tec. Size is 205 55 R16 I'm considering getting my tyres changed. I'm currently commuting mostly on motorways. I'm looking for a tyre that will have good balance of comfort, fuel efficiency and wet grip. I looked at the Vredestein Sportrac 5 (that seems to have poor fuel economy) and also the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance (that seems to have poor wear). Is there something I'm missing here or is it really a choice between wear and economy?
The latest versions of the Continental Premium Contact 5 seems to be able to balance wear and fuel economy.
Hello Guys, I need to purchase new set of 4 summer tyres for my audi a3 quattro. I want ones from the premium brands, size is 225 45 17, requirements- to be stuck for the road, the be secure on turns, wet and to be able to stop good :) So far I think the choice is between Continental sport contact 5 and Goodyear F1 asymetric 2. What I see in the reviews here is that more people like the Goodyear better than the Conti /which are commented not so strong on the sides and wearing tooo fast/, but according to the test done by different institutions, the Contis get 1st place several times in 2014 and Goodyear- none... So, hard choice, help ?:)
Either tyres would be an excellent choice! Looking at the reviews, the Continental tyres still seem to wear slightly quicker than the Goodyear, but the Goodyears sidewalls are softer than they used to be due to the low rolling resistance updates to the tyres, so they're ultimately very similar tyres.
Looking at the test results, the Blue Response is currently the tyre which will best meet your requirements.
The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance, or maybe Nokian Line are also worth looking at
Hyundai ix55 with winter tires: a vibration can be felt intermittently when accelerating. Dealer said it's not serious (ie dangerous) and caused by slight 'deformation' of the tire. Is this possible?
Tyres can go out of shape, it's worth getting a second opinion though.
Hi. I am driving Lexus IS250 and I need new tyres all around. 225/40R18 front and 255/40R18 rear. I am looking for something good for reasonable price. I am reading comments and I am confused. I had Vredestein sessanta and I had to change them(rear) after 8000km(normal driving) and the traction was poor. I put GY Eagle F1 and they are ok. but I don't have so much money now to put them again. Please, help me to find durable tyres with a good grip on dry and wet road.
If you want a tyre around the budget of Vredestein, we'd suggest researching the Nokian zLine and Fulda Sport Control
I took a puncture on rear tyre to be fixed yesterday on our Peogeot people carrier - garage said better to fit new tyre as tread low & fitted a Landsail 288 tyre. Never heard of it, assumed OK but now concerned as going back today to fit a match on other side - any feedback on these tyres? Was charged £70 each - but worried as the car does duty carrying my 3 children and all their kit around! Thanks if you can help
This should help: http://www.tyrereviews.co.u...
I have a flat Altenzo 245/35 ZR19 tyre can i change it with a Dunlop SP Sport 2000E 235/45 ZR17
No, there's 2 inches difference in wheel size!
I have a Ford Galaxy 2L TDCI 2012 plate and need to replace tyres. I have had a lot of conflicting information as to the best tyre to fit. Can anybody help?
What would you like from the tyres, what size and what budget? :)
Just bought a Jaguar XF 3.0 diesel sport with 255/35/20 wheels. Previously driven audi 4wd and concerned how Jag will perform in winter (hilly where I live). Very confused by winter tyre reviews - most of best performers are not avl in larger wheel sizes. Continental 830P looks good but reviews mention the improved 850P is to be released (but I can find no info re date). Jaguar recommend the Pirelli but this is very expensive. Michelin Alpin seems to offer good snow/normal winter performance but again 20% more than Contis. Then there are Dunlop, Nokian etc. I drive only 8k miles pa (mainly 8 mile round commute to work) with only occasional (once a month) motorway driving. Advice re most suitable tyre and guidance on buying older vs newer versions of winter tyres would be most welcome.
We're big fans of the Nokian WR A3. Not as good in the snow as the the Conti or Michelin, but still miles better than a summer and strong in the wet too. We will have more information on the TS 850P this week... for now:
http://www.tyrereviews.co.u...
Thanks. I had originally been looking at the Nokian but had been concerned to see some test reviews regarding snow performance such as:
http://www.autoexpress.co.u...
I have not yet driven the XF in snow but as I fear it will not be good, it is quite hilly where I live and the concern re getting stuck in snow is perhaps my main concern this review had put me off. Realise this is just one review but having never had winter tyres before and spending around £1k for a set I want to make sure I make a informed choice. Have not got much advice from local tyre depots - they seem to base advice purely on what they can get. Do you think Nokians will keep me mobile?
Also can I ask if winter tyres from diff manufacturers with diff tread patterns/characteristics can be mixed? Little concerned that if I have a puncture later in the season I may find that the tyres I have on are not available (and don't want to have to buy 5).
Really appreciate your advice.
I have a Landrover Discovery3 with Michelin Latitude Tour HP tyres and a set of ContiSport Contact5. Are either of these Winter tyres or All Season tyres? I have no idea how to find out. thanks.
The Latitude Tour HP is boarder line all season, but won't perform like a proper winter will in snow.
The Sport Contact 5 is strictly a summer tyre.
I am driving a VW Polo (2007) currently with 195/55R15 85V tyres but it is time for me to replace them. What tyres would you recommend I replace them with. It seems there are a ton of options but I am genuinely confused as what is the best one to choose!
That depends, what would you like from your tyres?
Mostly safety and good wear. Its not going to be travelling at very high speeds. Also we don't have a Winter season here with snow/ice if that helps. Thanks!
Can't really go wrong with any of these:

Michelin are known for good wear, so if that's a priority the Energy Saver+ could be the one
Much Thanks!! :)
Confused - I have a C180 Kompressor 56 plate. I am looking to change all 4 tyres but remember the last two years of the short snow falls in the Southeast. The Pirelli's on the car did not cope with the weather. I have read the threads concerning the all weather tyres (or not as the case may be) and cannot afford to run two sets of tyres (summer and winter). To that end, I was considering the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyre. Is this better than the Michelin Primacy 3 or Pirelli P7 Cinturato?
I have to make a decision now as one of my tyres has just lost its life to a rather large nail in the road and two others are on their minimum tread.
The Asymmetric 2 will be no better in the snow than the other tyres mentioned, if that is your intention.
As a sports tyre, it usually beats the Pirelli and Michelin in group tests.

Need new tyres for Ford Mondeo 2.5 Petrol turbo estate. Currently running Toyo 235/45/R17 97Y PXT1-R but have managed to wear fronts out in 10k and find them noisy. Would like something I can use all year round which wears really well and is very quiet. What would you recommend please?
We'd probably look at something like the Michelin Primacy 3. Excellent wear combined with good wet grip and low noise.

I am currently running on 175/65 R15 tyres and am planning to upgrade to wider tyres with a lower profile. What is the optimum size that I should be upgrading for better performance?
Can of worms! It's best to ask on a marque specific forum to find out what works with your car.
Naturally, it would be sensible to keep the overall rolling radius as close as possible to original. If you google "tyre size calculator" there are plenty of good options :)
I am planning to fit a pair of good year vector 4season tyres to my 2008 corsa. I plan to fit them to the rear in summer with cont premium contact 2's on the front and swap them in winter to have the vector 4season at the front. This may allow me to get some more wear from the Conti's before replacing with more vector's. Any thoughts.
Do you have any further info regarding all season tyre performance tests during warm weather?
The Vector 4Seaons is a borderline winter tyre, which means similar considerations should be taken into account when fitting.
As such we wouldn't recommended Vectors on the front and summer tyres on the back for snow or ice conditions as you will have a very large grip imbalance which could cause sudden oversteer.
It might be worth having a read of this: http://www.tyrereviews.co.u...
Hi, I have a Mitsubishi outlander, 225/55r/18. All year round tyes, what would you recommend?
The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV might be a good shout, available in your size: http://lovetyres.com/search...
What is a good winter tyre set for a 2006 Vauxhall Zafira 1.9CDTi please? Manual recommends size 205/55/R16. Do I need to buy a tyre with reinforced walls?
I'm about to replace all tyres of my ford focus 2.0 TDCi Sport. What is the best tyre so far in terms of longevity, safety (wet) and comfort? Btw, we don't have winter season here.
Depends on the size and intended use, but Michelin usually do very well for longevity so take a look at the new Primacy 3!
To be more precise, 205/55/16 is the size and its just for city driving. Is Continental Sport Contact 5 another good option if Michelin is not available so far?
The Sport Contact 5 is a great tyre, however Continental tyres, especially their sports range, have a habit of wearing quite quickly. The Premium Contact 5 might be a better option for wear.
How about the Comfort Contact 5 'coz the premium is not yet introduce here?
Sadly tyres that haven't been released in the UK market go a little outside our speciality, so we're unable to comment, sorry!
I drive a standard corolla and in my country (Asia) the price difference between a higher performance say Nokia V and all season say Bridgstone ER300 is the same, which is a better tyre to get? My main concern is wet driving as in rain very heavy during monsoon season (ie is there really that much of wet braking distance in real life measurement?) and then followed by wear? Will a high performance tyre wear out sooner than standard assuming I'm an average driver
The ER300 is technically a summer tyre, just designed for touring instead of performance.
In theory the sportier tyre in a given range might wear a little quicker, however when comparing brands it's very difficult to judge.
Aquaplaning performance and wet braking again is difficult to compare without seeing them in the same test.
http://www.tyrereviews.co.u...
The Nokian V and Turanza T001 (the replacement for the ER300) are in the same test above, and the Nokian is noted as high wear and not as good in the wet as the Bridgestone.
I have a Megane 1.5dci tyre 205 55R16 91H, everyone is suggesting getting winter tyres as coming into october however i hope my tyres would last for more than the winter. would these still be effective after winter? also looking around upto £80 per tyre, any suggestions??
Need new tyres on 2008 Seat Ibiza currently fitted with Bridgestone 185/60R/15-84T, but find them a bit noisey. Can get Dunlop at good price, but is there another you may recommend.
Reviews indicate the Uniroyal Rain Experts are quiet: http://lovetyres.com/search...
looking for 205/55/16 ...what do you think about DUNLOP 205/55R16 91Y SPORTMAXX RT !?
We've used them in larger sizes and they've been very good!
Any good tyres for mercedes c class 180k for comfort and grip in uk....
Lots, it depends on the size as to which!
I'm looking to buy directional tyres. Where are they??
Uniroyal Rainsport 2? Falken FK452? Avon ZZ3?
I have just fitted Goodyear Efficiency Grip (4x4 SUV) 235/65/17 to my Freelander 2 and whist they are quiet on motorways and grip reasonably well they do not cut the mustard off road. Even in a boggy grass field they cannot cope well. What should i have put on the Land Rover that is good in motorway and off road too. My old Discovery had BF Goodrich All Terrain and I could not fault them buy my tyre dealer said they were not available in the size needed for the Freelander 2.
Hi Pedy, I've just fitted General Grabber A/T's to my 2010 Rav4 in the same size as you mention and they are excellent. They have a higher load rating at 108 and from what I've read have the potential for high mileage. Road holding is now much improved compared to the oem Yoko's and the grabbers look great.
need new tyres for fiesta MK7 something that will give good grip and reduce road noise. on michellins at moment 195/50 R15 H 82
The Uniroyal Rainsport 2 is supposed to be a quiet comfortable tyre with excellent wet grip. The Conti Eco Contact 5 is also another one to look at.
Plenty of choices here: http://lovetyres.com/search...
I need to replace front tyres on Honda Jazz which are Kumho Ecsta SPT. The rear are Bridgestone Potenza RE040.(Have another years wear left) Size is 185/55 R15 82V. In Reading Bridgestones are available around £90.
Road noise is an issue and the car wallows a little. I was considering the bridgestone for the front but alarmed at the negative reviews. I want good braking in the wet.
Has anyone got any advice on tyres for the size
The RE040's are well suited to the Jazz, and will probably help with the "wallowing" issue, but not the noise issue, due to their stiff sidewalls. The Conti Premium Contact 2 is another tyre worth considering if you'd like strong wet braking.
Hi Guys Im Looking for a 225/45/18 none directional tyre. Is there anything out there. Could you recomend some tyres. many Thanks Guys
Probably the ultimate tyre at the moment:
http://lovetyres.com/tyre/M...
I have an audi a6 quattro 3l diesel. I have michelin on the front, dunlop on the back and I am about to change the fronts. My tyre specialist said a good tyre is the Khumo ku39. Is this a good buy for the money or is there better out there?
While they're not bad tyres, there are better mid range tyres from brands like Nokian, Fulda and Barum.
Check out this overview: http://www.tyrereviews.co.u...
Hi, I dont know wich is the best size for my Golf mk4 2.0 115hp, 195\65\15 or 205\60\15 and I am thinking in Michelin Primacy or Continental Premium 2.
thanks
The best tyre size is the one the manufacturer recommends in the handbook - this will ensure you have no insurance issues and the car will handle as intended.
Michelin Primacy or Conti Premium Contact 2, you won't go far wrong with either!
what is the best tyre to buy for all season on a mazda 3
That depends on tyre size and what you require from the tyre :)
How good are avon ZZ3 tyres
Not as good as Avon ZZ5s. http://www.tyrereviews.co.u...
Could someone give me some advise on the best run flat tyres for a Sportcar. I have recently bought a BMW Z4 with fitted Bridgestone run flats that tramline like no ones business, to be honest they feel dangerous! Is there a good run flat that wont do this ?
We believe the latest generation of Conti and Goodyear runflats are a little better, but they're still no match for an old fashioned "normal" tyre.
