Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 - Press Release

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 has just been announced!

The Asymmetric 5's predecessor, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, has always been one of the most popular tyres here at Tyre Reviews, so it will be really interesting to see how the new tyre fits into the competitive UHP / max performance segment overall.

As of yet, no one outside of Goodyear has tested the new tyre, but expect that to change in March next year. Keep an eye on the Tyre Reviews site / subscribe to the Tyre Reviews YouTube channel for full details! For now, here's the press release.

Update: As some people have pointed out on facebook, Goodyear skipped the Asymmetric 5. This is most likely due to the number 4 being bad luck in Chinese because it is nearly homophonous to the word "death".

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 Press Release

  • Successor to popular and acclaimed Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 range
  • Innovative technologies unlock significant improvements in wet braking and dry handling without compromising ride comfort or road noise
  • Caters to growing Ultra High Performance (UHP) market, with 61 SKUs arriving between February and December 2019 with fitments from Volkswagen Golf to Porsche 911
Goodyear has announced its next-generation Ultra High Performance (UHP) road tire, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5. Conceived as the ultimate all-round summer tire, Goodyear has utilized innovative technologies to unlock significant improvements in wet braking and dry handling without compromising ride comfort or road noise.

Key to the tire’s breadth of ability is Goodyear’s development of a highly-refined compound that combines wet weather capabilities without sacrificing endurance or dry handling performance. Thanks to a contact patch designed to extend when braking, the tire’s contact with the road increases to a level more usually associated with a track tire, resulting in wet stopping distances which are a significant 4 percent shorter compared to the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. [1]

Goodyear’s efforts to optimize performance focused on reducing flex in the tread pattern as lateral forces are transmitted. The resultant crisp, precise turn-in, higher grip levels and efficient, clean acceleration facilitate an improvement in dry handling. Feedback through the steering is also enhanced, providing a more communicative and confidence-inspiring driving experience.

Goodyear will introduce 51 SKUs between February and May 2019, with a further 10 arriving between June and December 2019. Goodyear will offer 17” to 22” diameters, 205 to 315 mm widths, and 50 to 25 side profiles, with intended fitments ranging from cars such as the Volkswagen Golf, through more luxurious cars such as the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 3 series to the standard versions of the Porsche 911.

This will strongly position Goodyear to exploit the robust 8.3 percent year-on-year growth experienced by the 17” and above UHP tire segment since 2012, now accounting for 22 percent of overall summer volume. [2] Upper segment vehicle sales are also forecast to increase from 17.5 to 18.2 percent by 2023 [3], while UHP demand from north-east and south-east Europe expanding 18 and 25 percent year-on-year since 2012 further increases the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5’s relevance to the market. Hi,

I am looking for new tires for my MINI Cooper S R56 (205 45 R17). Currently I am running on Conti SportContact 3 and I like the direct response. As I have to replace them I am struggling between:

    - Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5
    - Michelin Pilot Sport 4

(Pilot Sport 4s and Conti SportContact 6 are not available in my size)

The road feedback is most important for me and I prefer a hard tire than comfort, love the Go-Kart feeling. Which one would you recommend?

    Thanks in advance.

Of the two I believe the Goodyear has the small advantage, but I'm working on a direct test at the moment

Thanks a lot for this great review.
I already bought the Goodyear F1 Asym 5. Unfortunately I’m not so happy with them. The grip is amazing but in my opinion, they are a bit flabby on fast/quick steering action. On steering fast left-right the tires are giving in a bit and it feels a bit like swinging. This makes the driving quite comfortable but I am missing the sporty feeling and direct/hard response.
My previous Conti SportContact 3 had a direct response and were quite hard/bumpy, which felt like driving a go-cart, but I like that a lot. I thought about changing to Pilot Sport 4 but now, after your great review, I’ll keep the Goodyear for this summer.
And like you mentioned in your review, I keep on hoping for a Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in 17” next year, this would be great :) !!!
Thanks again for your help and this great video!

Hi Jan, I'm running goodyears on cooper s R56 in those size.
I have about 5k km and i like them a lot, mostly its city driving and occasional backroad fun, they feel really good and positive in the corners and wet performance is great. Wear rate is really good i haven't measured it but they still look brand new, mini is a light car so should be good for 20k km at least.
I was also thinking about ps4 but price advantage of goodyear was just too good.

    Hi,

I am curious what's the better tire for my Mazda 3 BK 2.0 Sport

    Original size 225/45/17

In the moment I am between the following

    - Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2
    - Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5
    - Continental Premium Contact 6
    - Bridgestone Turanza T005

    Looking for the best one!
Especially in dry braking, dry handling, wet braking and wet handling..

    I will appreciate your help.

    Thank you in advance.

        Hello,

Currently I am with Continental Conti Sport Contact 5 and I am not very satisfied.

Wheels circle often. Handling is not so good.

I was running Conti SportContact 5 same size as yours on my E46 Touring. They offer decent grip but they feel vague through the steering wheel. I'm looking for a more direct tire and I'm confused between PremiumContact 6 and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5. According to the review the Contis offer the best handling, but if the Goodyear is close to it I'd go for it as it's a tad lighter on the wallet.

    Hi,

I'm planning to replace my Pirelli Cinturato P7 (235/45/R18, build in 2012) for my Passat GTE and I'm really stuck in between Michelin Pilot Sport 4 vs Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 that we drive mostly in the Netherlands and from time to time to the neighbouring countries (oh, I love German Autobahns!) with about 20k kms per year. One big complaint that we have with our current tyres are that they are really noisy. In these circumstances which one would you recommend for 235/25/R18?

    Thanks!

    #5720
    1. TyreReviews M. Zafer Yahşi archived

They're both very close, and I'm just about to run this test myself, but if it's urgent I believe the Asym 5 to be slightly quieter. If you can wait a month I'll have the answer :)

Hi there, I'm looking to replace the rear tyres of my C63 W204.

If I take the wear as my 1st priority and the wet performance as 2nd. What tyre do you recommend , please ? Current size is 255/30R19. Thank you !

Traditionally Michelin have led the way with wear, but now Goodyear and Continental are equalling them in objective testing.Any of the big three will be great, this Asymmetric 5 seems to have a great price / performance ratio

Hi, I’m looking to replace my Dunlop sport maxx rt2 tyres, I have an Audi A4 avant with 19inch wheels.
I’m torn between the Goodyear asymmetric 5 & Michelin Pilot sport 4s. Could you advise on the the more comfort orientated of the two please?
Quick note for anyone looking at the Dunlop’s. When first fitted the performance was really great especially in the wet, but after a few months the comfort & performance fell off a cliff. They would be a hard tyre to recommend.

I loved the Asymmetric 2s I used to have on my Saab 9-5 Aero. Then I got a Jaguar XF with Pirelli P Zeros (245/45/18) that I have found underwhelming … so I am, perhaps, biased toward the new Asymmetric 5s.
But various summer tyre tests seem to place the Asymmetric 5s second to the new Pirelli PZ4s - so what would you consider the better match to the Jag of these two?

    #5517
    1. TyreReviews Caspar archived

Asymmetric 5 would be the more reliable buy as it's been better on average than the PZ4

The F1 SuperSport is the better match for a car like the ST in 19"

      1. Joe O Donnell TyreReviews archived

Cheers for the reply! Why is that? Because of the FWD and weight? Because of the 19? Will they last long too do you think?

        #5302
        1. TyreReviews Joe O Donnell archived

Because the ST is a hot hatch, and the SuperSport is sportier than the Asym 5. At a guess, wear will be about the same

Removed my All Seasons for the summer and fitted 4 Asy 5’s today. Can’t wait to get the releasing agent scrubbed off and give them a torture test over the next couple of weeks - can’t be any worse than the Bridgestone S001’s the car came with! Must admit I’m a little concerned about the economy being E rated, but needs must I s’pose.

No! Goodyear Asymmetric tyres are traditionally fairly soft walled and compounded. I had the 3’s on my A3 Sline, and have now covered 2000 miles on the Asy 5’s with my Golf R. I find them an excellent all-round summer tyre for the mixture of weather conditions we get in the UK.

i guarantee that, goodyear is more confortable. i used f1 assy 3 on 19 inches and definetly more quite and soft. and conti csc5 is wearing more then goodyear.

Some helmet has already published a review on this site and they’ve not been released yet. It makes no difference they’re a BMW driver, I suppose …but it doesn’t raise the profile in any positive way. Audi drivers would frown on this behaviour. ;-)

If you can find the right load rating in non-suv there's no reason to wait. If you're worried there's also the PS4 SUV

          #4767
          1. Bruce TyreReviews archived

Thanks, so the SUV version is just a higher load rating? Thicker sidewall or more reinforcement or something like that? I have not seen a good write up of the differences from a manufacturer and for smaller SUV's that are the same [approx] weight as a heavy car, hard to tell if if is something that should be factored in when purchasing.
